Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I finished our first round of preparation for the Science test, and began working on strategies and skills specific to the Math test. He made great strides in his attitude toward the Science passages since our previous session, and his change in outlook reflected in better focus and performance on the questions themselves. We tackled some passages that place multiple graphs' worth of information (and axes) into a single graph, and he not only persevered unfazed, but was also able to apply strategies we had discussed in our previous session to these more advanced passages without letting the complexity of the data's visual format distract him. Although we may come back to the Science test again as time allows, we decided to celebrate his breakthrough by focusing on a section that he enjoys more: the Math test. His Algebra and his function-based skills are very strong, as is his ability to work through permutation- and probability-based questions quickly and accurately. He did let me know that he felt a little rusty in his memory of Geometry and Trigonometry, so we focused our time on a balance of reviewing useful content from those two disciplines and exploring time-saving strategies for the Math section in general. In particular, we looked at: * Basic trigonometric functions as expressions of side-length ratios in right triangles; * Formulae for calculating the areas and volumes of 2- and 3-dimensional shapes; * Relationships between angle measurements in polygons & sets of traversed lines; * Pythagoras' Theorem; * The practice of testing answer choice C as a way to narrow the answer choices quickly from 5 to 2 when a question has numerical answer choices, since they'll always be presented in numerical order; * Some ways to determine whether it would be fastest & most reliable to use a calculator for a question or to estimate, make notes to work a problem traditionally, or mentally calculate the first/last digit or two of the answer."
"We covered: ACT science, test strategy, compound adjectives, writing the essay, data and graphical questions on the science portion."
"Spent half hour on each subject. Covered test taking tips for reading and English. Covered graph and table reading for science. Covered fractions and basic algebra for math."
