Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked through simplifying expressions (expanding binomials multiplied against each other, or binomials X trinomials). I showed him the three main formulas he will encounter and how to use them for these sorts of problems. I left him one of his past homework assignments to complete by next week's tutoring session."
"We covered factoring binomials, trinomials, and factoring by grouping. We also looked at graphing of trinomial quadratics. No big struggles today, just putting everything together and smoothing out the process. The student has a good attitude and seems like she works hard. I introduced a more systematic method of factoring trinomials which should help streamline the process and save time and effort. I left her with 7 practice problems and their answers. No concerns!"
"The student has an Algebra test scheduled for this Friday. So I have helped her practice Algebra Math problems for the 4 sections that she is going to have for the test. I also taught her the concepts for solving Perfect Square Trinomials & Difference of Squares problems."
"We continued going through the review packet provided to the student by the math department. This part of the packet involved rational functions, transformations of functions, and the graphs of rational functions. He had a bit of difficulty with getting the three cases for a horizontal asymptote straight. This is another memorization issue and can also be solved quickly."
"The student and I had a great session today reviewing methods to solve quadratic equations. She has a great understanding of what solving these equations actually means in terms of finding the x-intercepts and what that means to the graph. Today we focused on using the quadratic formula as the final of five methods she now knows to solve these equations. She had already memorized the quadratic formula, which I thought was awesome! The only mistake she made with it was the very common one of losing track of negative/positive signs in the -4ac portion. I think we went over it enough times that she now knows to be careful for that. We did several problems where I asked her to explain which of the five methods would be the best to use, and she answered all of those very well and was able to back up her choice. I think she is in great shape for the test on this material next week, especially considering we have another review session before she takes it!"
"We covered exponent addition and multiplication, factoring polynomials, quadratic formula, and did 15 to 20 practice problems."
