Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we reviewed the next round of the paper. The student's paper is definitely improving and getting stronger."
"We covered the assessment test release of a previous test. We did 10 questions of it and analyzed them after answering. Then we looked at the compositions being asked to write about and we had a small brain storm of what to write and how to write it. We also looked at the materials she is studying at school."
"This session we defined and went over vocabulary words. The student is reading The Giver, so we read a few chapters from that aloud and annotated key moments and words."
"The student and I covered the essay and essay-writing form today. Together we worked on a sample essay from the AP English test, going step-by-step through the various stages of organization. In developing a nuanced argument with various topic sentences, he came up with an answer to the question of whether Honor Codes are effective in schools and how best to work with Honor Codes. He drew from the AP's various sources to make his argument. In general, he has a good sense of organization and is quick to synthesize sources. I think he only has to focus more on being clear, direct, and slightly more argumentative when writing essays - in other words, to get to the real heart of the matter. Next week, we planned to work on one of his own essays and discuss its organization, along with the less sourced-based type of AP essay."
"Today, the student and I worked on reading comprehension and new vocabulary. He did well with new vocab and reading skills. More writing practice would help him improve his skill."
"Today, the student and I went over his homework where we read a story, and he wrote an alternate ending. He had to focus on using strong, complete sentences. He was excited to read this new story and write his own ending. I left him some reading comprehension questions to work on. I've emailed his teacher to see the grade on his latest test. Hopefully, he did better. One win from today was that he was excited to read the latest Frog and Toad story."
