Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We covered the structure of DNA and first half of DNA replication. I advised the student to really master the concepts we went over today. Next session I will ask him to teach me, so that he has practice understanding the concepts. By this, I hope to have him better understand the parts that are challenging to him."
"Student and I went over Thermodynamics together, going over the First Law, heat processes, and basic conceptual questions. I also tried to give her pointers for her next exam. I plan to make a practice exam for her, to see how she works in the midst of an exam."
"Today went very well. We reviewed protein degradation and talked more specifically about the process. We discussed how amino acids are held together as a protein by peptide bonds. In the stomach, the hydrochloric acid denatures the protein so that it makes the peptide bonds more susceptible to cleavage by other enzymes in the stomach and small intestine. This results in free amino acids that are transported to the liver. During protein synthesis, these amino acids can be rearranged and combined with other amino acids in the amino acid pool to create new proteins, much like different letters can be used to make up words. The student seems to be retaining a lot of the information that we have discussed over the past week and definitely learns from a more hands on process. In future sessions, we will capitalize on this learning style more."
"The student and I worked on his chemistry lab packets. We went over acids and bases, types of reactions, making a balanced chemical equation from reactants given in a lab, using solubility rules, making net ionic equations for precipitates formed, and explaining conservation of matter and why reactions appeared certain ways in the lab."
"I finished up an assignment with the student. I sent them copies of released AP Physics B tests, and we went through the mechanics problem and started the electrostatics problem of a previous test. They had never before seen anything about electrostatics, so I explained the concept of electric field, and showed them Coulomb's law."
"Most of this session was spent working first on reaction kinetics. He had a few types of problems that he needed help with, so we worked mostly on those types of problems until he understood how to do them. He also had a couple geometry questions, so we went over those as well."
