Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed topics in grammar, especially the essay portion. We also did some review questions for math for the first time to make sure the student still remembers the basics for the SAT."
"We went over some math questions and some tips for answering them quickly. Focused on word problems. We then went over some reading section questions and strategies."
"It was great to meet the student! She's a sweet girl, and she wants to get into A&M's new nursing program. She's much more confident with science and math and gets quieter when we work on reading. We talked about making flashcards to learn the SAT vocab and she excitedly told me about the flashcards she made for her medical terminology class (which is great because we can relate SAT words to Greek and Latin word stems she might already know from that class). This week, I'm going to find an SAT vocab book for her to use, but in the meantime I'm going to email her 25 vocabulary words to study. We're going to do 25 new words every week until the SAT. I asked her if she thought that sounded like too many or not enough, and she seemed to think it was fine. We can adjust that number of course if we need to. We spent most of the session discussing a previous practice test she had taken. She gets most of the math problems she does right; we just need to work on time management so she can get through the whole section. She ends up skipping a bunch. As for the reading, most of it comes down to learning the vocab. When I would ask her what she thought about certain sentences/passages without talking about a specific question, she was usually on the right path. Sometimes the questions would throw her, or the answers didn't make very much sense or didn't seem wrong enough. With the grammar questions, she felt very uncomfortable marking "no error" even if she didn't see one. She would assume she was just missing something. So I think an important thing to work on will be building her confidence on the verbal section. Lots of positive reinforcement - I think the flashcards will be helpful with this too."
