Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first tutoring session together. We discussed the student's previous SAT score, which was in the 1500s. She noted that she felt stronger in the math portion than in critical reading or writing, and additionally stated that she would like to work on improving her speed for answering test questions. Overall Tutoring Goals: 1. Improve critical reading scores 2. Work on Essay format 3. Improve speed 4. Some math review Topics we covered in today's session: - Focused on the critical reading section. Went over tips on doing 1 and 2 word sentence completion (i.e. contrast words, support words, using roots/prefixes to identify unknown words, making up your own word to fill in the blank before you look at the answers) , followed by 20 example problems that we completed together and for which we went over the answers. She quickly picked up these tips and was able to utilize them to get the answer choices down to two. While she was able to accurately find "her own" words to fill in the blank that were correct in terms of logic and grammar, her struggle was in accurately identifying synonyms for her choices from the answers provided. We will focus on improving her vocabulary skills in the following sessions. - We briefly began working on strategies for long versus short critical reading passages. Again, she did not have trouble with comprehending passages, but often struggled with choosing the right answer due to unknown vocabulary words in the answer choices. Homework for the next session (7:30-9:30 pm on Tuesday): #1) Provided the student with a small set of flash cards with core vocabulary words to go over before our next session. Vocabulary seemed to be a frequent obstacle for her, and I think we can tackle this by first mastering a list of 100 core vocabulary words that are commonly tested on the SAT's. #2) She will complete her initial diagnostic exam over the weekend so we can additionally tailor her future sessions to best fit her needs. #3) She will use the exam prep book to go over some practice questions in the critical reading section. We will go over any questions she had on those problems at our next session."
"The student and I spent our time going over all the sections. We worked through math, reading, and writing equally, as she wants improvements in all the sections equally."
"This was our first session so we discussed her strengths and weaknesses and looked at previous ACT scores. We also began reviewing from her ACT prep book."
