Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"While we began by talking about the theses and supporting examples that the student chose for three sample essay prompts, She and I otherwise set the essay section aside until our next session, when she will have completed a sample essay for us to review together. Instead, we spent most of this session working through the elements of the Math section that she finds challenging. We reviewed some of the common concepts (and equations) that show up in the Geometry-based questions in particular, since Geometry is the math class that she felt least confident in her ability to remember under pressure; other challenging points that we addressed included the nature of squares and square roots and the relationships between different elements of a polynomial. We also explored some shortcuts and general test-taking strategies specific to the Math section for both multiple-choice and grid-in question types, especially: * judging when to use a calculator to speed up basic operations vs. when it would be faster to solve for the first or last digit or two of an answer in her head; * using the fact that numeric answer choices are always arranged in numeric order to eliminate too-large or too-small answers quickly by plugging in the middle answer and evaluating whether it's right, too large or too small; * using diagrams and visual cues in her notes to make questions involving sequences, described shapes, and fractions easier and quicker to solve; and * using basic rules of math (e.g. a positive number multiplied or divided by a negative number always yields a negative answer; the square root of a number or variable squared is always that number or variable) to avoid having to do lengthy calculations by spotting the relationships between numbers or variables and by ruling out answer choices that would contradict those laws."
"Drilled through the remainder of general topics for SAT Math. Began with SAT Writing, specifically with sentence improvement, and went through the list of grammatical rules."
"This session went much better than the last session. The student's accuracy has already improved, probably because school is back in session now. Next session I will give her a few timed sections to see how she does."
