Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For this session, we covered more mathematics. We did start with vocabulary though and covered the 10 words the student defined as well as some of her previous words & Latin roots. In addition, as usual, I asked her to create sentences for them. We then covered sentence completions briefly, but quickly moved onto math. This time, I decided to show what I would do in one of the exercises and explain as I went along, allowing her to jump in when I thought I had showed enough. For the word problems, I showed her how I broke down each part and wrote it down, which I think helped her quite a bit. At the end of the session, I assigned her 30 words & 5 Latin roots to define as usual."
" We started with some Math (percentage review and quantitative comparison). At first, she was struggling a bit with using fractions to simplify the process of increasing and decreasing by a certain percent, so we worked with substituting numbers in these problems to make it more concrete for her (i.e. for a problem like "a sweater is 20% off--by what percentage will the discounted price have to be increased to get back to the original price?", instead of using the reciprocal of 4/5 to solve the problem, substituting in $100 for the price and showing how $20 is 20% of $100 and 25% of $80). She did better with the QR problems, and we had opportunities to work on a few concepts. We then did some work on sentence completions. She usually was able to narrow down to 2 possibilities. We closed by writing some sentences that incorporated new vocab words."
"Today we focused on quantitative reasoning and the math portions of the upper level placement exam. I want to bring these young ladies into the 900 score range so that they have a better chance for the school of their choice. Also working on their essays that are due at the end of this week is a priority."
