Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went through his trigonometry problems. He understands the information but has issues with the word problems. I helped him understand certain terms and helped him draw it out. I helped him through most of it and then gave him additional problems that he was able to get through. We also did some of the review of his virus review sheet."
"Today, the student and I went over circles: radius, cord, tangents, and angles. She was willing to learn and was positive about the material in which we were reviewing. I didn't leave her with any extra practice because she still has more review sheets due for class that she's working on. What she struggled with the most was applying the theorems to the specific problem."
"We worked on chords. In particular, angle measures of chords and theorems involving chords. Some problems involved multiple steps to draw triangles in the circle and solve for lengths. We also reviewed areas of circles and squares. We finished the homework."
"We worked on review problems to prepare the student for a test tomorrow. I emphasized the following tips and strategies for her test ( 1 ) memorize one relationship between degrees and radians, such as 180 degrees = pi radians, and calculate the others from that, instead of trying to memorize a bunch of them, and ( 2 ) for problems with diagrams of circles and chords, input the information you know and fill in as many angles and lengths as you can, using what you know, and working it like a puzzle to work out the answer, since there is no recipe "step one, step two, step three" for this type of problem. For the multiple choice questions asking which of four statements is NOT true, I encouraged her to look for the ones that are obviously true, and then use process of elimination to work through the other choices, rather than looking for the false one right off the bat."
"The student had another long homework assignment. This time it was a review of transformations, proofs, and graphing. We spent most of the session discussing it. She seemed pretty confident with the material, and she didn't need much help from me. All the material covered on the assignment was review of the last few weeks. She also said she did well on her graded homework assignment from last week. For the last few minutes of the session we did some practice with similar triangles."
"In today's session we concentrated on geometry. Specifically we did surface areas and volume of assorted shapes including prisms, cones, pyramids, cylinders, and spheres. We also discussed how to find the surface area of non-regular shapes (cones on top of cylinders or turning any shape into a pyramid)."
