Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, we did some research/compiling annotated bibliography and checking APA citations. The student also began book summary for another class."
"Today we reviewed the student's practice essay (college entrance exam writing section prompt). We continued to practice supporting theses with well-developed reasons. I assigned additional practice essay for homework."
"We covered a lot of territory in 90 minutes. We first got to know each other a bit. Then we read the first chapter of a book My Life as a Cartoonist. We went over the plot and the meaning of words. We started to make a vocabulary list. The student is going to find synonyms based on the idea that the vocabulary word is 25¢ word and she has to find a 10¢ and a 5¢ word. She is going to go over the words and the next time we see each other, I will have a fill-in-the-blank vocal quiz for with sentences that are missing the word. Then, I asked her to write a paragraph based on a project that the hero of the book also wants to do himself. She wrote a paragraph. We went over it, first just to enjoy it. Then we discussed two elements: pronouns and spelling. She is going to type up this paragraph, expanding it and creating some illustrations on the side. Afterwards, I explained to her the rhetorical modes of description and narration. We talked about what her ideal bedroom would look like and she is going to write a descriptive paragraph about it. Together we wrote some of her basic ideas, so she won't forget and will already have a bit of a structure to write on. Then we talked about a dog she once had. She is going to write a narration about something that happened to one of her pets. I assigned four pieces of homework: vocabulary, a fiction piece, a description of her ideal bedroom, and a narration about a pet. She and I will see each other in two weeks. I am going to send a copy of this review to her father. He seems to really appreciate communication."
