Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"For our third session, the student and I met at 6:30pm. I brought a couple of different books for grammar review and reading practice. The student began by telling me the class is one day behind according to that outline he had given to me so the material I brought for the day was ahead of where he was in the class. However, he wanted to go over the material anyway for the upcoming week. Prior to our session, I made a chart that included the irregular verbs that I had noticed the student had struggled with. Within the chart were the tenses present, preterite, past participle, and present subjunctive. The student began to complete the chart using his notes and textbook. He worked well independently and asked me questions to clarify any confusion with particular verbs and verb tense rules. The chart was incredibly useful because it gave the student the chance to see specifically where his strengths and weaknesses are with verb conjugation. Also, it helped him form new ways of memorizing vocabulary that he had forgotten over the years he has been learning Spanish. There were many teachable moments while the student worked on the verb chart I created for him to practice. From looking for patterns in spelling, and using jingles to make the rules stick, we reviewed the material in different ways. For this session we reviewed the past participle, which is the topic he will begin working on this week as well as the present subjunctive. I ended the session by telling the student about a song by Juanes called "La Camisa Negra". His professor uses music often in class, and this song uses the subjunctive tense often yet in a really upbeat and interesting manner."
"Both students and I reviewed colors, weather descriptions, a few common questions, domestic animals, and names of rooms of the house."
"We went over vocabulary, practiced expressions with "tener" and practiced some conversation between the boys. I feel like they are making good progress with Spanish."
