Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We are scheduling today and tomorrow. My goals are to review important points from math and verbal, giving him notes and problem sets that he can work on. In math, we reviewed coordinate geometry topics that he had issues with, and also worked on the basics of combinatorics and probability. We then worked through some text completion exercises, reminding him of the skills needed for eliminating incorrect answers (and also of the necessity for guessing before looking at the answers). We then discussed the issue essay. He is to do one for me for tomorrow's session. Also, he is to do an argument essay to show me how he does based on our brief discussion of this."
"We used this session to continue working on the sample assessment test passages, this time by tackling the graphs. The student did a great job of using the outline she had pre-written to pull out important details and use them in her answer. She did a great job of answering the question, although she had some trouble deciding which pieces of the passage to use as evidence. One thing she needs to work on is keeping her answers under the word count. Both this short answer and the short answer from our previous session were long and needed a lot of cutting. We talked about ways to shorten sentences and to really cut all of the fat from these answers. After our discussion, she did a great job of getting them in under the word count. We also talked about some strategies for the way she works through the test itself. If she tackles the writing first and then the multiple choice questions, this should hopefully give her time to go back and edit her short answers and essays. Going forward, our plan is for the student to complete the larger essay for this passage on her own. I will have more sample passages ready for next time, so we can move on to a new topic."
"After introductions, we worked on exponents, a couple of logarithm problems, and areas of circles. We will need to revisit exponents, spend more time on logs, and continue with area/radius/circumference of circles. Also, we worked Pythagorean Theorem. Finally, we need to spend part of a session on percentages and ratios."
