Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Focused on the verbal section of the placement exam, focusing on word roots and prefixes in addition to vocabulary. Will focus on sentence completion, reading comprehension, and math in the following sessions."
"We spent this entire session reviewing the essay at the end of the ISEE that is used for high school admissions. I have assigned the student about four practice essays up to this point, and I have found that he is extremely responsive to coaching. His last essay made massive improvements in structure, and this essay continued to have a solid structure and made large strides in the descriptiveness of sentences and engagement with concrete examples. This made the essay more interesting to read and proved his point in a more thoughtful fashion than before. We talked about the next step, which is directly addressing the implication of his concrete examples so he can deftly flow between the ground level and the theoretical level. I decided to spend the rest of the session doing one of my personal favorite exercises where I come up with an essay topic and he has to rapid-fire outline a response to it, over and over. We got a chance to do three more essay topics, all on issues that he is likely to encounter on the ISEE or in high school admissions questions. I assigned one more timed 30 minute essay for homework before our final session on Thursday. I feel that most of my work is done and everything else he needs to do just involves reviewing the vocabulary note cards he has created and thinking about the strategies that we have learned in the past few months."
"We have doubled up on sessions this week and will be doing so the remainder of her days prior to her ISEE test. I instructed her to complete Test 6 of the test master exams but to only do section 2 (QA) and 4 (Math) so we could solely target her two lowest sections. She is performing at 87% or above in section 1 and 3 ever time but consistently lower in sections 2 and 4. We have managed to shave down the number of errors that she has in QA by 7 questions with the help of some test taking strategies we have implemented to help her address the question in the manner the test is asking for, however, her math still remains lower. I have created a module where she can practice series of math questions and flash cards with the equations on it to help embed those that she isn't familiar with into her permanent memory."
