Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session, we were preparing the student for his midterm the next day. He had been given a second worksheet by his TA and wanted to go over some of it. We began by having him tell me what they had covered since our last meeting. He told me that they had learned the chain rule, and he was having some difficulty understanding how to use it. I attempted to explain it several ways before giving him examples of how and when to use it. After a few problems, he began to get an understanding of it, and was able to apply it to some of the problems on the worksheet. Afterwards, we went through some final word problems involving taking the first derivative and creating tangent lines."
"The student's class has begun studying derivatives. Last night, he and I practiced finding derivatives of functions using the limit definition; thanks to his well-developed skills with evaluating limits, he had almost no trouble once he understood the basic formula of the definition of differentiation. We also looked briefly at the application of derivatives to find slopes of tangent lines."
"Today's session covered specifically implicit differentiation of the first order. The student brought his review sheet that his teacher handed out to the class. He has a test over the material on Monday. He has a good overall grasp on the implicit differentiation, and for the most part was able to get the correct answers for most of the problems. He made a few minor mistakes with his algebra after his differentiation was completed. I made sure to give him some tips about taking the problem step-by-step and staying organized with the equation solving. I did not leave him with any extra practice as he wanted to complete the rest of his review sheet. I do not have any concerns from the session. He definitely has good potential."
"The student has a test on Thursday, so we did a couple of problems from each section that the test will be over to review. She felt good about most of them, but wanted a little extra practice. One of the problems gave her trouble, but we were able to figure it out together. I know she'll do great on her test!"
"We started a new material involving differential equations. We did a few problems that covered setting up a differential equation modeling the growth of bacterial and the decay of toxic material. Then the differential equation was solved using separation of variables."
"The student has a test coming up, so we spent the session reviewing concepts. He took an online practice exam and wanted to go over a few of the problems he had trouble with. For most of the problems, he knew the steps, and we went over why you did things a certain way, so he would have a complete understanding for his in class test. After the session, I believe he had a good understanding of the material and will do well on the exam."
