Tutoring review by Chris in Balch Springs, TX
She was working with the concepts of logarithms and exponential functions. She told me at the beginning that she was struggling with understanding the material. I helped her through a couple problems rewriting logarithms in exponential form to solve equations. Once she understood how to use that skill, she was able to do most problems on her own. Also, we talked about using inverses of logarithms, natural logarithms, and exponentials in order to solve equations. She understood that skill and was able to apply it correctly to solve equations.

Tutoring review by Michelle in Balch Springs, TX
We went over a review sheet for her upcoming exam on Tuesday. The material on the review sheet was different than the material we had been working on the past week. This material included challenging word problems with distance, rate, and time. She understands some of the concepts, but the more challenging and involved problems are difficult for her. It is definitely important that she continue to review the fundamentals including solving equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in addition to the rules of exponents and square roots.

Tutoring review by Bert in Balch Springs, TX
The student and I reviewed the essay I had him write for me for homework previously and discussed ways in which to improve the essay. Although his essay length was adequate, his piece still felt lacking in terms of a thesis, depths of his examples, and word choice/ diction. I advised him to condense his position and thesis into a one sentence conclusion of his opening intro paragraph. As for his examples, I indicated to him to be as specific as possible - instead of saying "otherwise bad things may happen," a better version would indicate specifically that "otherwise the people may expose themselves to a ruler ill-suited to making the best and most just decisions for the people." We reviewed the concept of proper topic sentences for his paragraphs as well, points that I will have him work on in future practice essays. For the remainder of the session, we worked on various problems for the math portion of the SAT. He made minor mistakes in permutation problems involving the "slot method," such as failing to deduct one for each "slot" he has used up and in table/graphs problems where he had issues with interpretation. Overall, however, I would say that he is able to correctly and reliably answer up to question 16 in a 20 question part section, so in the future we are looking to improve his success with the harder questions.

The overall objective was to provide an interactive enrichment session. I provided an interactive experience using the basic skills. During the session, we covered history, mathematics, and research using chess. The students completed an interactive research assignment covering the history of chess along with famous players. We also had a read aloud experience where the students had an opportunity to read a passage from a self selected story.

Today the student and I discussed estimation, place value, and partial products. She picked the concepts up quickly, and we worked through the problems together, comparing our answers. She is going to complete the work, and then we will compare answers when we meet again.

Tutoring review by Corbin in Balch Springs, TX
For this session, the student and I focused on preparing for his test the next day. We covered solving for present and future rates, interest rates, compounded interest rates, and interest periods. He seemed much more upbeat about this exam in that he felt the material was a lot easier than the previous test.
