Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In today's session, we reviewed writing by composing a five-paragraph persuasive essay from the prompt (Is a cat or dog a better pet?) and composing a narrative piece from a picture prompt using dialogue and details."
"Today we went over his assigned reading in the book Holes. We also went over how to properly describe past events. I've assigned him homework to read and re-write the work that he did in our session today."
"The student showed me two essays she had written for homework. I showed her how both essays had the same problems: listing things rather than describing them, and repeating the same clauses, instead of varying the sentences. I urged her to look at the novels she enjoys reading, and compare her writing to that of the authors. She found this helpful and was able to point out most of her own mistakes. For revision, I had her choose a different essay topic (she had previously chosen a subject from her imagination, but I encouraged her to use more of her real life experience, since I thought it would be easier for her to write vividly about something she was intimately familiar with). She did a really great job at applying my suggestion to this revision; she transformed her sentences from simple statements of facts, for example, that she and her family had ridden in a gondola, to a vivid picture of the sleekly polished wood and the rocking rhythm of the waves, etc. She showed real improvement in her revision today. I encouraged her to keep up the vivid description and specific detail as she expands the paragraph she wrote today into a full, two-page essay."
