Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
The student and I worked on his subtraction today. He's moving very quickly, which is exciting, as it makes his confidence grow.
The student and I did a lot of drilling on identifying and naming organic molecules with functional groups (ethers, ketones, alcohols, etc.). The student and I were working through a geometry review that mostly consisted of proofs of triangle similarity and congruence. There were occasional places where she got stuck, but for the most part, she remembered all of her rules for proving triangles similar or congruent on her own.
1. We mostly covered long division of polynomials. We also briefly reviewed the quadratic-factoring strategy based on the +/- signs of 'b' and 'c' in ax^2 + bx + c. We also touched a little bit on systems of equations because the student didn't fully grasp the topic before I started tutoring him; I explained what they are, what it means when they equal each other, and how to solve them algebraically and graphically. 2. His biggest and only struggle now is minor errors (he understood the topics I taught him very well). He frequently added instead of subtracted and vice-versa because he got tripped up when subtracting negative terms in polynomials. Other times, he multiplied coefficients by mistake instead of adding them. I reminded him to be careful with his work and advised him to put the entire polynomial being subtracted (in the long division process) in parentheses to remind him that each term is being subtracted. 3. He was hesitant at first due a lack of confidence because he had just learned the topic, but he quickly gained his confidence as he realized that he knew the topic very well. He wanted to tackle the hard problems. 4. Wins: He mastered long division of polynomials right away and understood the "+/- b and c" concept.
He worked on his homework handout involving circles. We set up the first problem on the back side, which he assured me he would finish on his own, and he completed the second problem.
The student is doing well and continues to improve. We covered more practice problems today in his workbook. I like the way the student's attitude has changed about math. He seems to be enjoying his work and is starting to spend more time with the subject outside of his tutoring session. I look forward to working with him next week.
The student and I went over chords, tangents, and secants of a circle. We went over practice problems together during our session. At the beginning of the session, I worked together with her on problems by asking her various leading questions to help her solve them. After a couple problems, I encouraged the student to approach the problems on her own and simply think about what would be her first step towards answering the question. Initially, the student was hesitant to do so, but after pushing her, she was able to see that she indeed had the knowledge to recall all the necessary information and successfully answer the problems. As we continued with the practice problems, she grew very confident and showed that she understood the concept very well. She has improved very much since our first session, having received a 97% on her last quiz. She is doing very well!
It was a pleasure to meet and work with this student. She is a very diligent and enthusiastic student. She excelled in her middle school math courses but is having a bit more trouble with the more abstract, proof style of her ninth grade geometry class. As we work more together, I expect her to become more comfortable writing proofs.
We covered inverse trigonometric functions, as well as finding angles in a unit circle. The student was really struggling with linking angles to operations and values, but once we deconstructed what inverse functions were, she started understanding. I taught her methods by which you can determine the exact values of functions within the unit circle. That took up a majority of our time, but she was understanding it very well. At the very end, we covered domain and ranges of trigonometric functions, and she understood this pretty well also. Overall, she learned quite a lot from the lesson and should do fine on this section with some more practice.
The student worked on her ELA homework, ELA test review, and math homework. I helped her understand factors and showed her the trick of dividing the numbers in order to figure out if it's a factor. She has a difficult time with multiplication facts and this is something we were working on. She seemed a lot more confident with me this time.
The student did a great job. We looked at parts of speech which included antonyms, synonyms, and capitalization. She did a really good job of using her context clues to figure out words she did not know and then giving me responses for antonyms and synonyms. We worked on drawing conclusions from the text and some testing strategies to help with chunking and breaking down large parts. Once we worked on the strategies, she did much better on drawing conclusions. For math, we looked at equations with one and two variables. We looked at Pythagorean Theorem and how to work through figuring out sides. This was a new concept, and we spent a bit of time going over that. Overall, she did a great job and really focused on asking questions and making progress!
As the student has a test on Friday, we covered the materials she would need to learn in order to do well on the test, namely trigonometric functions. She has no problem solving basic problems, but struggle a bit with questions involving altitudes of right triangles. After going over several problems, she has a better understanding of them.
We worked on the student's organization of his folder. He did well! He had already done his math homework, so we reviewed it. I had him go over it and explain it to me. He seemed to have a solid understanding of equations. I had him read an article and asked him in-depth comprehension questions that encouraged him to create an opinion and defend it. Then, we worked on more complicated equations. He did well!
