Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we completed a MAPEX exercise and a poem for his English class. He got a B on his most recent history test. He is pleased with the grade because it was better than he expected. I need to make sure that next time he stays on top of the reading."
"Today we started the session with the student. He was working on some difficult measurement problems in his math workbook. I guided him through the equations, looking back at the chart to find the conversions. Next, I worked with the other student on her Social Studies assignment which referred to the chapters in her book. When that was finished, we completed an extra credit assignment for science. We went over the science chapters as she has a test tomorrow. Finally, we reviewed the math tests. I made sure she understood all the concepts and then I pretaught the next chapter. "
"Discussed locus and the different ways it can be tested on the exam. We worked on drawing the locus of a point, line, parallel lines, and the intersection of loci. We also reviewed transformations (reflection, translation, and rotation). We almost finished reviewing the June exam in his blue book. He did well on the written response questions in parts 24."
"We went over the student's data set and the five questions she is trying to answer. I suggested doing a paired ttest as an alternative analysis for her second question. For her ANOVA she is going to recode her numeric variables into groups using quartiles and run two ANOVAs, on for superintendents and one for chairpersons. For the multiple regression she is going to run 8 regressions, one for each assessment score plus the graduation rate. Each regression will have two independent variables: the chairperson score and the superintendent score. We'll meet again tomorrow to look at the results and check our assumptions for the ANOVAs and regressions."
"We reviewed the function of vectors in trigonometry starting with vector operations and unit vectors. We touched on the applications a bit re: Physics but intend to delve more deeply into Physics problems in our next session."
"The student practiced reading words from flash cards and writing sentences including those words. He also read one of his take home books. The other student practiced writing sentences including words from her 100 day word bucket. She read a section of Curious George and wrote about her favorite part. She finished the session working on math addition and subtraction with multiple digits."
"The student again completed all her homework! With the science section, we have now completed test 1. Her score raised dramatically in all areas! Her composite score for test 1 is a 27. I'm incredibly pleased to see such dramatic improvement. Her homework for the weekend is English, Science, and Math (questions 1 39) of test 2, along with half an hour of reading on her own."
"We did math today. We worked on his critical thinking math homework problem. Review adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions, and converting fractions from mixed numbers to improper fractions. The student did an excellent job. He can think through may concepts quickly and can add, subtract, multiply, and divide efficiently."
"Reviewed circle and ellipse conic sections. The student went through problems on a worksheet I provided. Overall his understanding of the circle is good. Through our practice, we tried on developing a pattern in approaching and solving a problem to avoid making mistakes."
"We covered solving for x equations that involved fractions and decimals and utilized clearing the fraction and decimal techniques. We also worked on solving inequality problems that had fractions in them as well as a few word problems that involved writing out equations and solving them utilizing the previously used concepts. I checked the student's answers to note progress."
"The student and I went over more of the math concepts from his assessment test review book. We practiced inequalities and some geometry. Some of it was new material for him so we will be practicing more of it."
"At today's session with the student, we worked on a science worksheet that he had, discussing diatoms. The worksheet included an article about diatoms, asked the student to summarize it and to list the main idea and main concepts from it. Then we started a lab assignment and answered the preliminary questions, regarding the concept of sampling. Finally, we worked on some math problems that involved calculating the slope and plotting a line through a given coordinate pair.
The student expressed that the math was not something he has covered yet in class, but rather something he was reading ahead in and wanted to learn on his own. I really appreciated his motivation and dedication to his studies, enough to read ahead and bring his questions to me. It is nice to see a student who is engaged in their studies to such a level. No concerns from this session. Great job!"
