Instead of having the student take a section and going over it afterwards, I had him take the test with me and explain his reasoning as he goes through the problems. He seems to be plateauing so I wanted to see if I could isolate the problem. He was underlining every single line in each reading, which I told him to immediately stop doing. We then focused on going through each answer and thinking critically about his answer before choosing one."
"The student's ACT Science homework started off very strong, but in the last couple passages she began guessing when time ran out. We ran an abridged ACT today which had similar results; she knows the content and simply struggles with time management. We discussed some more pacing strategies, and we will continue to work on pacing this Saturday in our final session."
"We focused on the Reading and Math sections of the ACT. We reviewed the necessary Math formulas for the test in addition to working on some practice questions for the Reading section. As far as the Reading section is concerned, the student seems to be struggling the most with the context of the passages in addition to recognizing the tone of a passage. He should continue practicing on these areas of the test and reviewing grammar and punctuation."
"Monday we spent the entirety of our time looking at math. We began with some easier beginning problems that we worked out together before delving into more subject specific types of math. For example, we covered functions and domains. As we continue, I would like to do the same thing in regards to math, as it can be beneficial to target specific subject areas and go further indepth with them (trig, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, etc.)."
"We worked on calorimetry, gas phase analysis, and balancing redox equation. I reiterated to her what she needed to study in order to understand solubility problems, and we worked through several problems she had with concepts she found in the book."
"At the beginning of the session, we reviewed the student's Math section that he took yesterday. We discussed how factoring can increase speed in solving quadratics and how to solve complicated probability questions. He then took several more timed practice sections that we will review tomorrow."
"The student and I pent our last session returning to the math portion of the exam. Going through the questions, it was clear he had a good sense of the math foundations. We therefore spent our time focusing on how to set up the equation derived from the question correctly by practicing reading the question. The student's success tomorrow will depend on him remembering these exercises. At the end of the session, we concluded by going over all the tips for executing the exam, how to manage his time, and how he should relax and believe in his potential to do well."
"Today we worked on ACT math. We started by going over differences between the SAT and the ACT, basic topics covered on the ACT math, and the general formulas to know in order to be successful on the ACT math, as well as how to use them. We then worked through a few practice ACT math problems. I think he is really strong in the basic math and algebra, so I started focusing more on geometry and trig. We started going over more geometry stuff today, and we'll finish up with geometry and trig next time."
"The student got his results back for the November SAT. He did extremely well! He got a 1930 overall with a 10 on the essaya 280 point increase over his first practice SAT exam. He was happy with the 1930, although he had hoped for a higher math score. To prepare for the Math 1 subject test he is taking, we worked on some math practice today from the SAT book. He did pretty well although we did have to go over a few of the more difficult questions. We also went over some practice Math 1 subject test practice questions I got from the website. These were a little more difficult but the student was able to figure them out. He will complete the practice questions and email me if he needs my help with any of them."
