Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on the student's math assignment. He understands the concepts, but I am starting to realize that he struggles with basic algebraic arithmetic. We went over sample problems and filled in the gaps."
"Today The student and I worked on Geometry. She is concerned that she has a B and will not be able to bring up her grade. She showed me the break-down for her Geometry grade, and we talked about the points that she could still earn. We finished her Geometry homework without too many questions. Next, we worked on a project for English class."
"The student will be applying to schools, only the Math and Reading portions of the SAT will be necessary for him. He's made good progress on the Reading questions. Today we focused on sentence completions and long passages. The techniques we applied included covering the answers and trying to anticipate what word(s) should go in the blank. "
"The student and I discussed his goals for these tutoring sessions, and he told me that he wants to become a better reader in general. He wants to be able to read out loud without fear of embarrassment and to be able to read and write emails faster. I gave him The Old Man and the Sea to read, and we spent most of the time reading out loud from a self-help book."
"We continued to work on the book "The Hot Zone". I have asked him to write short summaries of the chapters as he reads in hopes that his memory will improve."
"The student and I got started with an assignment on displacement and distance/rate/time. He had begun this on his own okay, but needed explanations of the logic processes necessary after the first few problems; we eventually completed the assignment successfully."
"The student and I reviewed practice problems he had on confidence intervals and hypothesis testing. He seemed to have a better understanding of confidence intervals but is just getting started with hypothesis testing. If he continues to put time in studying until his test on Friday, I think he'll do ok."
"Today we started by working on her school application. We discussed brainstorming, drafting, and writing a shirt essay response. After she did a draft of each question we reviewed her answers, and made any corrections or changes we saw fit. We then worked on reading and math. She does well identifying the main ideas and supporting details. Overall she is doing well."
"The student and I went over the study guide for this Thursday's test. She came prepared with questions, and we discussed the problems she had difficulty with-most of them about growth and decay, or finding a point on a circle given arc length. When I left, she said she felt much more confident about her final. We discussed meeting the first week of school to get a head-start on her calculus class."
"The student had a quiz today and received a 95% on it, which made us both very proud!! She has an exam on Friday so we went over the new material and then reviewed the older material. The new subjects included the Hardy-Weinberg theorem, endosymbiotic theory, and modes of selection, and stabilizing."
"The student and I worked on the English and writing sections of the test today. He solidified his knowledge of punctuation and grammar rules, and we went over the "formula" to write a really good persuasive essay."
"I worked with the student on one and two digit addition, one digit subtraction and one digit multiplication. I introduced him to touch Math, modeled how to use it and asked him to demonstrate to me that he understood how to use this technique. He did very well."
