Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued working on the Reading section, this time working on passage-based Reading. She did very well on this portion as well! I assigned another practice section as homework."
"Great session with the student today! She is still struggling with area vs. perimeter, so I plan to find some additional practice focusing specifically on that for her to work on. Identifying when to use cross multiplication is also an area we need to work on more. In English she needs to work on prepositions and possessive pronouns."
"Today we continued preparing for the big exam this weekend. I'm still working to encourage him to up his confidence and answer a few more questions each run, and we're still reviewing a few math/grammar concepts here and there. Overall he's prepared."
"The student took several practice sections in preparation for our meeting today. We began the session by going over the questions that he had from his practice tests. His questions were about solving functions written in unusual notation, and solving functions with absolute value. After reviewing his questions, he took three timed practice sections: essay, writing, and math. He had difficulty coming up with examples for the essay, but once he did, he was able to write an essay with very strong form. In writing, he did well. For next time we will continue to do timed practice sections, reviewing the questions that he has difficulty with."
"Today we went over colligative properties, did multiple problems and explained real world examples. We also tackled equilibrium constants, quotients and Ksp problems. I left her with solubility rules and polyatomic ions to know and understand for tomorrow."
"Today, we went over the practice math and English exams I had the student take. We also went over dividing polynomials, and an English 'correcting sentences' section. I gave him the 100 most common admissions test vocab words to memorize, 1 math practice test, 1 English practice test, as well as 4 quizzes about variables for homework. He's at a very good level already, but there's still some practice to do in terms of hard geometry work and some English."
"Tonight we re-reviewed the entire pre-algebra section of the Math review. She is absorbing a great deal of information, and more importantly, learning from her mistakes week to week. Next week we will pick up with the algebra section and hope to get through all seven lessons before winter break. We also reviewed several writing concepts that we've been building on for several weeks. We will definitely finish reviewing the writing section before winter break."
"In this session, the student and I discussed the two timed practice exams she took for homework. She did a very good job on these, but we agreed that her scores did not reflect how well she would have done if she treated them like actual exams. We went over the problems that she did not answer correctly and talked about how she could avoid making the same mistakes in the future. She has all of the knowledge, skills, and strategies she needs to get an exceptional score, so she has every reason to be confident in herself on exam day."
"The student and I discussed the upcoming admissions test and her preliminary admissions test scores. We discussed her strengths and weaknesses. She mentioned that she struggled with Writing, so we review helpful hints for Essay Writing, and took a practice Writing section together. We also reviewed Grid In Responses for Math and completed some examples."
"Today the student and I talked through her goals, strengths and weaknesses and the math diagnostic test that she already completed. We then worked through a reading diagnostic section -- she did moderately well on the passages but struggled with the vocabulary. We then walked through each vocab question one by one and noted down any specific words that she was unfamiliar with. Before next session, she will look up all of those words and be prepared to generate sentences with each one at the beginning of next session."
"The student and I went over the rules of exponents and did many example problems. He started feeling comfortable after working the examples, but I want him to continue to review these notes before our next session. We also talked about data analysis and started some probability examples. On Tuesday, we will continue discussing probability and then do work with logarithms. We also looked at a few writing questions today, which we will continue next time. He shared his preliminary admissions test results with me. He did very well on critical reading. His math and writing scores were also good. He is starting at a great baseline and will only improve with more practice and review."
"We covered three verbal practice sections, and identified the places needed to score additional points. These are: learning vocabulary, and being able to identify the main idea of a passage and find a particular sentence to support a multiple choice answer. The student made progress on the reading comprehension questions as she implemented these tips, though she still had difficulty on the most difficult questions. We also covered vocabulary study techniques. This will be crucial and take daily study, but will yield good results. Around 8 questions she had trouble with were simply vocabulary knowledge. She appears motivated, and if she continues to implement these reading strategies and learn vocabulary, she should be able to score the additional points needed on the Verbal section."
