Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session we reviewed his vocabulary list and added another 25 words. He also has to come up with an additional 15 words to add to the list. He did a 25 minute reading and sentence completion section during this session. He did well on it. We worked on other short passages, note taking, looking for keywords and oddballs. He did excellent on subject/verb agreement sections and side by side passages. We reviewed his test taking strategies and made a plan for the week leading up to the exam."
"The student and I worked on the Reading section, covering Sentence Completions. She did very well! She can do additional vocab work, but her understanding of the method is very strong. I assigned her a practice section for homework and we will continue with the Writing Section next time."
"During today's session, we focused on working on some additional practice questions for the math subject test. In the math practice, we continued in our regular manner of the student answering each problem with me providing support if necessary, and finding additional information and explanations on especially certain problems."
"During this session, the student and I focused on the critical reading section. We spent about 30 minutes learning about new vocab words. I then had him test out an alternate reading strategy that centers around working through passages. The student is going to try and complete a full-length practice test before our meeting next Sunday."
"I met with both students for our final session of assessment tutoring. This was our second consecutive three hour session this weekend. Once again they completed six sections of a practice test. I also read over an essay by student one that was pretty strong. I am confident that they will do very well."
"It was great seeing the student again after his last test. We worked on math today. We focused on word problems."
"The student and I went over the answers to a practice test that she had completed after our last session. Based on the answer key and scoring guide, she would be scoring around 660. We corrected the questions she got incorrect. She struggles with questions involving formulas still, but is much better at recognizing the concepts involved in solving them. We will go over oxidation and reduction reactions as well as voltaic and electrolytic cells at our next session. In the meantime, the student will complete a practice test for us to score on Wednesday."
"Reviewed the list of English words and Latin/Greek roots vocab the student had memorized in the past week. She did very well. Assigned next set of vocab for next two weeks. Further debriefed about the long-hand essay she wrote and the Writing section she started last week. When work on long-hand essays in future, will focus on writing simple sentences without as many dependent clauses. Assigned the student to continue looking over writing section practice exercises and perhaps answering the sample questions at the end. However, she is most concerned about not knowing about all the different types of math questions and concepts. So started working through and discussed sample math problems in math section of study book. Assigned the student to either continue working on math sample problems or writing problems in addition to vocab before next session in two weeks."
"Today we went over the Reading section he had completed on his own, and he got a perfect score! We then completed a science section together. His biggest obstacle is extracting the relevant information for each question and ignoring the superfluous information, so we will work on that in the future. We also started an English section which he will finish for next time."
"This was our last session. She is feeling more confident and her grasp of grammar has really improved. We worked on vocabulary for a few minutes and then spent the rest of the session focused on math. We began with a review of percent change and probability and then moved onto sequences and systems of equations. She seems more confident and I think she should expect a significant jump in her scores. Good Luck!!"
"Today we wrapped up our SAT preparations. She is a dedicated, smart, and hard-working student, and her efforts are going to pay off on test day. Occasionally a tricky CR passage will throw her, but otherwise she's prepared. We also talked about managing nerves/anxiety."
"The student expressed the most concern about the writing section, so we first did an SAT writing section from a practice test in the study guide and reviewed the incorrect answers. We then did a math section from the practice test and reviewed the answers. I also gave him some test-taking strategies for both of these sections."
