Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student is a quick learner and already picking up on the corrections I make as we work together and implementing them independently. His math was exceptionally good today, he scored perfectly on the first 30, as he should be able to continue doing. We hope to work on writing next time we meet."
"Rather than work out problems together, we just had the student take full length sections today. He was able to finish a reading, verbal, and essay section all in the 2 hours."
"We spent time on the Math, Science, and Reading sections today. He did fairly well on the Science and Reading sections but needed some help with the Math. We need to work more on solving a system of equations and the other more advanced topics. I also introduced him to trig (mainly radians) as he hasn't yet gone over that in school. We will continue working on Math next time we meet."
"Today, based on the results of the student's recent practice test, we completed timed drills for the math section, discussing such topics as means and trig ratios as well as such strategies as picking values and plugging in the answers. No concerns to report. I left extra math practice."
"Today we covered rhetoric, style, essay and paragraph structure. The student completed a practice Reading test, finishing all questions in time and scoring 27/40, a scaled score of approximately 24. This score demonstrates good progress in reading comprehension. She also began an English practice test (current score 56/61). I suggest that she finish an English practice test before next week's session."
"Today we went over the reading and math sections that the student had completed since last time. He only had a few questions on both sections. I'll be sending him logarithm practice questions as it's been a long time since he's done those. We also completed an English section together and it went well."
"Focused on reading test strategies: for fiction, identifying tone and diagramming characters; for nonfiction, predicting POV questions, ignoring unnecessary detail. Ran 3 passages, including a notoriously challenging Hemingway piece. Finished with a few math problems I thought would be useful to cover."
"We went over a practice reading and science section tests in the practice ACT book that she had. She scored a 24 on the reading which was a point higher than what she usually gets. On the science she did extremely well and scored a 35."
"We focused on prose inferences and overall discussion of tone and authorial intent. We also focused on earth and space sciences. Overall, it is just slight nuance that is tripping her up, but we have been able to identify some of those patterns and key phrasing to pay attention to in the questions. We will set up the remainder of our tutoring sessions leading up to her exam on Thursday."
"The student and I went over rules of exponents and logarithms and did practice questions to help understand and apply the rules. We worked through percentage problems and some statistical data analysis problems. We ended with probability. Next week, we will continue with probability and then start working on geometry. We will also incorporate some reading and science sections. After our session next week, I will also ask her to start doing some outside tests and practice."
"Excellent session. The student made strong progress in English by working through two diagnostic exams. We pinpointed a few areas to focus on next Monday, and we're going to pickup tomorrow with math. For next Monday we will focus on: the subjunctive mood, punctuation rules in the case of quotation marks, rules for colons and semicolons, and more tools of the trade, like spotting doubles."
"This was our last session before the student's placement test next week. She did exceptionally well on sample English, reading, and science passages, getting a perfect score on all but two passages. She quickly saw her mistakes on the three questions she missed, and she can correct such errors by giving herself more time to read through the passages and answer choices. She also did well on math, and we talked about how she could help herself by marking up diagrams with any information she knows. She is in great shape for her test!"
