Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Completed the student's math homework. We looked over her assignments, practice, and classwork to check the skills the was learning. She was very mindful of the particular skills that we will need to remember for the final. We also discussed future scheduling of tutoring sessions during and before final exams. "
"We reviewed for the Chapter 9 test. She attempted most of the problems, and we went over the problems she did not understand. I also gave her an 8 question assessment as a review of the types of problems she may see on her test. Lastly, we talked about writing problems down correctly and taking her time."
"With all tests out of the way, we focused on the final exam. The student had all of his old tests to review so we simply went over two old exams. For most questions, I did not provide the answer choices just to see if he knew the answer without having to choose, almost like a fill in the blank or short-answer style of questioning."
"Today the student and I worked on some geometry problems from her homework assignment. She seems to understand it very well. We also discussed her upcoming science fair project. We picked a topic she could potentially research, and we discussed experimental set up and other details."
"I guided the student in composing a polished English essay about the structural differences between high school and college institutions. He had composed a first draft, but needed help clarifying his thesis statements, topic sentences, and essay organization. I also talked with him about how to use secondary sources for an essay, MLA formatting, and what evidence he needed to use to prove his argument in the essay."
"In our first session, we reviewed the results of the student's diagnostic tests in English and Science, going over the incorrect answers. We discovered that most of the challenges she encountered in English were subject-verb agreement questions. I gave her a tip of crossing out the prepositional phrases for a clearer view of the sentence structure. We then went over the science test. The student's homework is to go over her incorrect answers on the Math and Reading tests, and I am going to send her some practice problems for English and Science."
"We spent about 2/3 of the time on SAT math, and pinpointed some areas where he is having trouble. The last third was spent on critical reading. We talked about the balance between reading carefully and keeping an eye on the clock, and on the practice test he took, he said he felt better about critical reading now that he is reading the passages more carefully."
"The student and I reviewed reading comprehension strategies. We spent most of our time working on arithmetic. The student responds well to correction and seems to be learning from her mistakes."
"We reviewed trigonometric properties and how to verify trigonometric identities. We came up with a few strategies that can make verifying identities easier. After a few practice problems, the student said that she was more confident with the material."
"We did timed practice for the English and science portions and some challenge math problems. We also discussed the essay and read sample prompts. No concerns to report. I did not assign extra homework. The student is doing best with math and perhaps struggling most with rhetoric based English questions, although it is hard to know because she misses very few questions on any section."
"Today we worked on the areas she didn't feel confident in so far- square and cubic roots, simplifying complex polynomial equations and determining functions. Hopefully by next week she will have access to her online homework to ensure she is up to speed in the class!"
"I introduced linear equations and solving for x and y intercepts. The student caught on very quickly and seemed really interested in the subject matter and even referred to it as fun. We also focused on punctuation rules for grammar, focusing particularly on semi-colons, colons, and apostrophes."
