"The student took an entire math practice test and scored in the 560-640 realm. We worked through the ones she missed; she's getting more strategic about skipping problems instead of guessing wildly. She still abandons problems when she doesn't immediately know what to do, rather than playing around with the problem to see how she can manipulate it. (One problem said that if xy=7 and x-y=5, what is x^2y- y^2x. Typically students first try to figure out x and y, but if you play around with it for a while, you really can factor it to xy (x-y) which is 7x5. You don't need the individual values of x and y, which is what throws people. She left this one blank.) This area needs further work. I'm noticing a weakness on graphing problems as well, so we decided to focus on that for next week. She made fewer casual mistakes but there were still a few, including one when she added instead of multiplying and one where she ignored the word least and looked for the greatest value. I encouraged her to annotate the questions, boxing words like sum, product, least, greatest, etc., that are key to the problem."
