Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session we did a math review of the main topics that she should expect to see on the ISEE. We started with percent increase and decrease, for which she was able to compute the percent increase of the volume of a cylinder whose radius was doubled but whose height was halved. We then went on to discussing systems of equations, and she did a quarters, nickels, and dimes problem correctly after being reminded of one equation that she needed to write down. We continued with a review of factoring and went over how to factor (x^2-y^2) and (x+y)^2 and how to relate these to (x+y) and 2xy respectively. We reviewed the properties of adding terms with exponents, how to multiply terms with exponents, and how to raise terms with exponents to other exponents. She did very well on this section, which even high school students struggle with. We reviewed how to FOIL out terms which are in parenthesis and how to simplify after that is done. We also reviewed the order of operations, or PEMDAS. Finally, we reviewed the line equation, one of the first topics that we had discussed. This session was excellent, in terms of her retention of knowledge and her ability to learn new concepts and being comfortable using them. She'll do well on her test."
"With quite a mountain ahead of us, the student and I trekked through arithmetic again, making sure to spend the entire hour nailing the math part. With so much math to cover, I really wanted to make sure we got the basics down before we hit both higher math or other sections. He found a way that worked for him to do number line problems, as well as line segment problems. He excelled at order of operations, however, and we breezed through that section quite easily. We also covered arithmetic word problems. He's showing improvement."
"Both students had taken another class on placement exam prep during the Thanksgiving break, so we worked from their texts. We reviewed the sample tests both of the boys had taken and worked on vocabulary building. For Student A, we reviewed his math performance. For Student B, we worked on reading passages and I tested him on vocabulary that he had been assigned last session."
