Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked on word problems involving fraction multiplication and division, percents, unit conversion and proportional thinking. We also reviewed LCD and factoring. The student is still struggling a bit with equation solving, and we will spend time in future sessions working on strategies for accurate equation-solving steps."
"We started the session with SAT math prep. We went through the first section so I could explain the examples that the student was unsure on. Before our session, he already went through that section himself to determine which examples were confusing to him and this was great. Once I finished explaining the examples he was not sure of, we did 20 questions at the end of that section. First, he tried each on his own. Then I stepped in if he was not sure how to break down the questions. After SAT math prep, we moved to algebra 2. For algebra 2, we worked on factoring, foiling and simplifying when quadratics are placed in fractions."
"We practiced sketching the graphs of different solids of revolution and setting up the integrals to calculate their volumes using both the disk/washer method and the shell method. We talked about how to decide which method better based on how to integrate, such as some functions are going to be easier to integrate in the disk/washer method because we are squaring our function. We went through how to determine the different radii or heights when we are rotating around an axis that is not our x- or y-axis. The student has a set of practice problems for all three methods, as well as a couple problems that use the cross-section method that they are just starting. Once we had a sketch of our slices for our solid, she was able to set up the integrals using the formulas for the different methods."
"We went over the problems the student got wrong on her first test in detail. Then we went over integration by parts and the best way to approach them. We did a problem she had and a few practice problems I had. Then we went over trigonometric integrals and did practice problems."
"The student did his homework on interest, compound interest, half lives, and logs. He did very well on the homework. He struggled to learn logs initially, but after practice, solved the problems correctly. He will memorize the half-life formula and will learn logs in class next."
"The concepts covered specifically were partial derivatives, directional directives, gradients and vectors. The student needed help with finding the derivatives of root functions. She was very confident during the entire session and shows a positive attitude towards learning. The strategy I used was to work through practice problems."
