Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I covered rational expressions, finding vertical/horizontal asymptotes, and domain of functions. I also showed her a trick on her calculator to solve certain problems at much quicker pace, which can be very helpful in an exam."
"The student and I spent this session reorganizing his academic life. He brought a new binder, and once we set up a new organization system, he completed some of his classwork that he didn't finish. He has some tests coming up, so hopefully, this reorganization will help him improve his grades. We will meet again in a week."
"We reviewed area between two curves and how to set up the desired equations in both x=f(y) and y=f(x). We also began to review some concepts for the ACT, as the student got back his scores and knew which areas he had a harder time with."
"The student and I met and worked on some differential equations. He is doing pretty well at this, but I was still able point out a couple of new techniques. One was simplifying an integrand by long division. I think he has reached a level of confidence where he would benefit from exploring ways to increase speed and efficiency while solving integrals. For instance, he could eliminate the formality of u-substitution by recognizing certain patterns in the results, or noticing when there is a simple geometrical interpretation of an integral."
"Our session this morning was dividing pretty evenly between two topics: simplifying expressions with radicals/ exponents, and basic trig functions. It's been about two weeks since we worked on simplifying, and it seemed like the student had regressed a little in the meantime. He needed help on basically every style of problem that was presented, and I remember him having a better grasp on it when we last worked together. We managed to make it through the entire review, so I think he'll be in a better place for his test retake. The trig function packet went much better overall. It's great that he's developing a strong grasp on these foundational elements, because it will make more advanced trig topics easier."
"Today, we went over a few of the topics that the student was having a hard time on. We went through the Pythagorean Theorem and the product property of radical expressions. I also gave her some tutorial materials on her TI-84+ calculator, as she will need to know how to work with that calculator if she is to succeed."
