Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on the review packet for the student's chapter 5 test tomorrow. There were about 35 problems focusing on derivative and integrals of natural log function, exponential functions of base e, and exponential functions of base other than e. He did very well overall, especially with the derivatives. He had some minor challenges with few of the integrals. However, with some coaching, he improved as we went further along in the preparation. I feel confident that he will do well on this exam. I advised him to take his time, watch his signage, not to integrate until he sees the derivative of the function inside the integral as well (or attain it), and lastly to always double check his integration by taking the derivative of the answer."
"Today, the student and I worked on interest formulas, exponential growth, exponential decay, and compound interest. He did very well but he needs to memorize the formulas A(t) = a(1+r)^t and A(t) = Pe^(rt). He should ask his teacher for a few more problems on this subject to practice with. He did great this session."
"We covered simplifying radical expressions. The student had done all the work on a practice sheet and was doing very well. I pointed out that she should try to write in the "=" sign when simplifying the expressions, and then test out the solutions using some sample data points. I also think she should continue to try to find a study partner. We also reviewed the set theory of numbers (natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational, irrational, real, complex) and reviewed the importance of really understanding rules, formulas, and definitions."
"We worked on balancing net ionic equations, solubility rules, strong acids and bases, molarity equations, and dilution equations. I reviewed the concepts with her and did some practice problems with her. Sometimes she was confused on the basic concepts and I had to refresh her memory on them. After I explained the basics and the equations, she had a better understanding of the problems. I also gave her some shortcuts on how to approach the problems."
"Tonight I tested the student with some review, and she really remembered her multiplying/ dividing with decimals well, and was able to do more complex problems with percentages and decimals than last time. I started working with her on orders of operations and solving equations with an unknown variable. I also worked with her on her math club problem and showed her some strategies for solving sequences. We spent some time on the logic puzzles, and she did the whole puzzle without guessing, and is using a lot more deductive reasoning skills."
"We worked through sections 9.1 and 9.2 to prepare for the student's quiz this week. Since we reviewed them last week, we were able to focus on doing practice problems. She did quite well and we spent the last 20 minutes discussing strategies for memorizing the unit circle and preparing for the upcoming units. This was a great session!"
