Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over the assigned homework, which was a writing section and then we went over the essay part of the Writing section. I explained to him that it should always be comprised of a short intro, paragraph 1 (example 1), paragraph 2 (example 2), and short conclusion. I told him not to get caught up in the quote provided and to focus on the prompt. We did a timed practice essay and he overall did quite well, just needs to focus on his wording-- being more direct and using less lofty language as well as using more strong supports for his examples-- explaining the 'whys' and the 'hows' in particular instead of just repeating that the examples illustrate the question posed."
"The student and I reviewed critical reading, vocab, and math. His critical reading skills have greatly improved. I asked him to do a practice math section and a practice essay before our next meeting."
"In Tuesday's session we went over improving paragraphs, improving sentences, and correcting sentences sections of the assessment. The student will work on his flashcards for next week. He will also complete more of the writing section problems, write a sample essay, and will complete a math section."
"Today, we went through writing and math sections today. In math we focused on geometry, and in writing, we focused on the easy to medium questions for the multiple choice. I showed him some strategies for the writing test."
"The student's essay for today was much better, probably in large part because she had researched some potential topics beforehand. Her reading section was quite good as well. We worked more on negatives and divisibility for math. Once I walk through a math problem with her, she seems to understand. I have asked her to complete a timed math section and an essay for Friday."
"Today we went over the essay that the student wrote and I provided strengths and weaknesses and the ways that she can improve her essay. I noticed improvements from the last essay she wrote so that's good! We then went over the questions she got wrong on her practice passages and math questions and we discussed geometry, combinations and permutations, and the faster way to solve algebraic equations. We then reviewed sentence completion strategies, especially noting the placement of the comma as a clue to the correct word to fill in the blank. For homework, I told her to write another essay and compile a list of 5 literary works that would be useful in essay writing. I would say she is improving and with more hard work, she will do well."
"Today we covered vocabulary, as well as reviewing a critical reading test. Additionally, the student wrote an essay as practice for the writing section. In the test she completed, she did questions 26-50 of a practice test, and scored 92% on these questions, which shows a large improvement from previous efforts. As she is taking the SAT very soon, I wanted to focus a bit on the essay section, so she took 25 minutes to write an essay, and then subsequently I evaluated it. Her essay was fairly good, however, it was a bit inconsistent grammatically, so I suggested that she should make sure to leave a few minutes at the end to go back and check for errors/typos. Overall, it was a very productive session."
"We went over a practice test for reading that she had done. When she spent more time looking at the questions and eliminating the answers she was able to correct most of her mistakes. We then went over some writing multiple choice which she understood well and she got the majority of them correct. I left her with the rest of the writing multiple choice to finish for next time."
"Today we primarily focused on writing and vocabulary as an introduction to the SAT. I provided a timing scheme and framework for writing the essay and we worked on outlining a mock essay. We then moved on to vocabulary and talked about the role of vocabulary, methods for studying it, and resources to use. We decided to focus on the word list that she had already received from her school in addition to memorizing prefixes. We will move on to a more extensive list in the coming weeks. I pointed out the benefit of prefixes and we worked through some examples. For homework I assigned a timed essay, memorizing vocabulary, and memorizing prefixes along with creating new examples."
"Continued reviewing the Math section of the SAT with a focus on word problems, data analysis, and probability. The student needs more practice with the harder probability problems especially, in addition to some more practice with word problems in general, though she is improving."
"We covered Reading, Writing and Math sections. We talked about remaining weaknesses and how best to practice in the last week before the test. We discussed essay strategies in particular. Other than continuing vocabulary practice, the student will complete all of his schoolwork before starting practice tests this spring break."
"The student and I reviewed the sections of the second exam that she had completed for tonight. She is scoring pretty steadily. I would like to see some more improvement in writing and reading. She needs to continue drilling her vocabulary cards. We then finished our algebra unit with a review of the strategies we learned last session. Next session we will turn to advanced arithmetic."
