Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I discussed a class assignment. She needed to watch a video, write about its themes, and give a short summary. We watched together, and we discussed it as she wrote down her ideas. Next, we read an excerpt from a novel and discussed as we read. Lastly, we practiced verb tenses with two quizzes. She continues to do very well with reading and listening comprehension."
"We worked on Discursos/formal speaking, pushing the envelope to understand what helps. The student realized that by just revisiting the different topics/discursos, he was able to do much better. We discussed using different tenses, getting lists with some higher level words/phrases/etc. to use, and not just using the present tense. There are 2 more weeks to work before the test."
"The student did excellent in this session as we are getting closer to the AP exam. She has become stronger in her abilities as we have practiced and prepared arduously. She is in good shape for the test."
"We worked more on practicing multiple-choice problems and both conversational sections. For the multiple-choice sections, we focused on reading one longer passage and answering several questions about the same passage. We talked about some strategies with reading over the multiple choice questions first before reading the passage, and then marking where we find potential answers. The student seemed much more comfortable and confident with the speaking sessions. She greatly improved in the conversational section with using all of her time and higher-level grammar. Next time, we're going to spend some more time on the cultural comparison section and talk about strategies to use up more of the time. I am confident that she will excel on the AP exam."
"We practiced a set of exercises, one textual and one listening, from an AP exam. We reviewed some of the strategies that are helpful for tackling those exercises and questions. The student did well. His exam is today, and he felt generally well and relaxed about it. He has a very strong foundation in the language, can follow and understand complex texts, and is more fluent now when responding to orally. If he continues to build on his skills over the next few years as a college student, he'll attain fluency and be prouder of his hard work. Great job."
"Present, and future conjugations. Noun and adjective agreement, reflexive verbs. She was focused and intent on learning the grammar and concepts. Flash cards and listening to Spanish television were recommended, as well as Spanish subtitles in English movies to build vocab. I left her with a list of must know verbs,-- verbs that I feel are essential to know. She caught on to grammatical concepts quickly; she just needs to work on memorizing vocab to utilize the grammar."
