Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, we tried a new approach. Instead of doing content lessons and then related questions we went through an old MCAT and did physical science passages together. It went very well. I think we will do that from now on. It gave us the opportunity to go over the periodic table, Lewis dot structures, specific heat, bond energy, Gibbs free energy, entropy, enthalpy and Le Chatelier's principle. The student took another practice test over the weekend. We are both glad about the improvement and have realized that she needs to do a lot more practice on verbal reasoning."
"We went over MCAT physics. I reviewed energy, work and power problems. Then, I went over momentum and simple machines with work problems. Lastly, I covered nuclear decay questions. I left extra questions to work on."
"The student completed a practice test on her own. She did a bit better this time (27). We spent the entire time going through the entire test together. She needed a bit of work on work functions and electrostatics. We did a couple English passages together. We finished by going through the bio sections. She did particularly well on the Chemistry and Organic Chemistry passages."
"In this session with the student we focused primarily on aromaticity. We discussed the criteria for Huckel's rule (4n+2), and Sp2 nature of aromatic compounds. We also covered aromaticity of ion containing compounds, as well as aromatic compounds containing carbonyl groups. Towards the end we took time to review previous topics discussed in the last few sessions to refresh on the topics."
"For today's session, I brought a biology section test and a verbal section test to use as practice. We decided to time the biology test in a similar fashion to the real MCAT, so we completed 27 questions in 35 minutes. Both students have consistently been very good with time management, so they both completed the test with minutes to spare and did very well. Next, we went over several difficult verbal passages without timing them. Again, both students did great, and we finished up the session with a discussion of the order of events on test day."
"We went over various passages from the textbook concerning acids and bases as well as electrochemistry. Overall, while she continues to have some difficulties answering questions in the above-mentioned topics, she has greatly improved since we last met and went over passages concerning the same topics."
