"The student had to write an essay about one of her volunteering experiences. She already had an outline, so we worked together on fleshing out those ideas and putting them down on the page. She completed a strong draft that she will add more details to on her own."
"Today, the student had some writing homework (an introduction to a report on solar energy), so we tackled that first. His academic writing is pretty serviceable. He definitely is aware that his weak point is "details," so he's careful to fill in a lot of them. We worked on making sure he covered the main points he was trying to make. We also talked briefly about his research process. Then, we moved on to a game he called "Descriptionary." We took turns describing a famous person without naming them, making the other person guess. We talked about specific details and how some details can be more important than others ("he is tall" is less important in this game than "he lives in the White House"). Finally, we returned to the fantasy story he had been writing last week. We filled in a few more bubbles in the personality chart for the main character. Then, we talked about setting. I had him describe the dragon king's throne room for me, in as much detail as he could manage. He was very clear and gave me a very complete picture of the room. We then talked about how setting can influence feelings and how important that was to a story. We talked about how the throne room might feel to a subject and how it might feel different to the dragon king himself. He did well with this activity. He seems much, much more interested in this fantasy world than in telling stories about real life."
"We spent the hour on classwork and homework sheets, doing phonetic reading and writing. The student's writing is improving in terms of orienting the letters properly in the space provided and he is able to vary the size according to the various worksheets. His reading and spelling is excellent when he is focused and attentive. His focus was much improved this week."
