Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we reviewed the material from the last few chapters. It went well, the student seems to have retained most of the information he learned really well. It was a good session. We won't be meeting this week and will figure out when to meet the following week at a later date. Overall a very good session, he is doing very well in chemistry."
"The student worked on writing equations of lines. He had to use point-slope form and standard form (y=mx+b) in order to prepare for a test the following day. The student was very cooperative and focused during the tutorial session."
"Once me moved to the floor instead of at the table the student did some very good work. We did some reading, completed two homework activities, and played a spelling game with this week's word list."
"The student completed one math, one writing, and the sentence completion part of one exam. We then reviewed each section. In math, geometry and logic problems seemed to cause her the most trouble. We reviewed angles and shapes - how to solve for angles in various shapes or diagrams. In writing, she only got a few questions incorrect, so we just went over those questions. In sentence completion, she did okay. She got several questions wrong, not because she didn't know what the words meant, but because she didn't have the proper understanding of the words that belonged in the blanks, though she is improving."
"Worked with student 1 for 30 minutes on her social studies homework. Worked on reading thoroughly for better question or material understanding. Worked with student 2 for an hour on percent of change in order to prepare him for his math test on Thursday. He seemed to understand the process a little better. Discussed with student 3 changing session length from an hour and a half to an hour since school is coming to a break. Discussed preparing student 2 for IB program and working on essay questions in order to do so. Will email helpful worksheets for student 2 to complete as he studies for his math test."
"The student worked on a sheet of radicals and rationalizing the denominator for his homework in preparing for a quiz. I gave him some problems that were much more difficult than those from the sheet and he had no problems with them."
"We reviewed the student's homework set that covers atoms, cations, anions, atomic mass, mass number and isotopes. She seems to understand it very well and just needed a little guidance with some difficult questions."
"We mapped out the essay-writing process and worked ahead on one of her English assignment. This was a very productive session, and I'm also grateful to see lots of progress with the student in her joy and openness with me!"
"We returned to focus on the math section today. We did a short review of some basic concepts, then worked through the drills, identifying queues that will indicate whether the student should attempt to work through a problem or skip it to save time. The test is on Wednesday, so for our final review tomorrow she will complete one section of the math, one of the reading, and the writing section from the exam. We will review her progress and talk about final preparation for the exam."
"We covered a variety of physical science topics but focused on momentum and thermodynamics. We covered the three types of collisions and how to approach these questions on the MCAT. For thermodynamics, we covered enthalpy with Hess's law, entropy and Gibbs free energy."
"We started the preliminary phase of sentence diagramming. I had them use symbols to label the parts of speech in sentences (simpler sentences for the girl and more complex sentences for the boys). The girl's pronunciation while reading out loud has improved a lot and her handwriting and neatness has too. She and I also reviewed the poems she wrote and the poems she memorized and picked a new poem for her to memorize next week. With the boys, I had them do part of the practice test. One got all the questions correct. The other had some trouble with the vocabulary and sentence arrangement, but understood it when we went through the problems together. For homework, they all have sentences to finish labeling and a new poem to memorize."
"Today we went over her assessments and quizzes on the molecules of life section. She did pretty well with it overall, and needed very little help from me in general. She still had some trouble with some of the basic vocabulary (i.e. monomers, polymers, etc.) but with some reminding, she was able to get the concepts pretty well. She is starting to move through the class much faster now, so it's going quite well."
