Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did SSAT practice test one-math, pages 148 through 150; the student showed good progress on mastering concepts. We also did part three-reading; and of the 11 questions answered the student had eight correct. We did some vocabulary on page 206."
"Today the student and I focused on mathematics. We worked through a practice section, and focused on the questions that she was able to answer. We also worked a synonyms section that was particularly challenging--she did well. I assigned her a bit of homework to prepare for our last session next week."
"Tonight the student and I worked on the synonyms section of the test. I taught her how to mark up her answers in accordance with learning how to employ the 3/5 rule. The four markings I taught her tonight will be used throughout her test prep. The student was engaged and I appreciated that."
"We began by going over practice problems. Then we covered algebra and arithmetic for the remainder of the session, with practice questions interspersed for each topic. Next session we are going to start with coordinate geometry and do some reading help."
"We continued to work on math, reviewing the practice sets that she completed last week. She is improving on her understanding of percent problems, and continues to work on recognizing them in word problems. Once she realizes that it is a percentage problem she is doing a better job of setting them up correctly. I left her with about 10 worksheets to help her with estimating, percent problems, and dividing fractions."
"The student and I went over Latin and Greek roots for vocabulary. We also went over the answers to two practice sections that she completed for me. On the math practice section, she scored 20 out of 25, and appeared to have the most difficulty with word problems. For the reading comprehension, she scored 37 out of 40. She had trouble with one nonfiction passage, which I believe comes from her not reading the answer choices carefully enough. We also went over arithmetic series and sequences."
"Today, we conducted half of a full length practice exam because the student's exam is in the next couple of weeks. His writing and his synonyms and analogy skills are not where I would like them to be but his math skills are above average. I would encourage him to do some serious root word and reading comprehension practice before the exam."
"Analogies and Reading Comprehension were the focus of the session. The student scans material pretty effectively. The more he reads and acquaints himself with the Verbal sections of the test; the greater the improvement. He is building a vocabulary list for study and review."
"Reviewed math concepts-exponents and variable substitution; verbal-reading comprehension and sentence completion, strategies and problems; provided homework for the students to continue with material learned in class."
"The student is making great progress. We focused on reviewing a section of the Math test that she did a week ago and then went over the homework. I assigned her an SSAT and ISEE practice test for homework."
"We worked through the final section in our SSAT math preparation materials, focusing on word problems. The student completed the entire practice set, and we discussed strategies for keeping track of what is being asked in any given question and for increasing speed without compromising accuracy."
"The student and I began by finishing up the analogy section that we had started last week. She is getting stronger in her ability to establish the proper connections between the words. We talked a bit about being aware of words that have multiple definitions, and using the limited context to discern which definition is in play for a particular question (for instance, the word "appointment" when paired with "commission" is unlikely to mean "scheduled meeting"). We spent the rest of the time working through a math section."
