Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed chapter 6 (probability) today. For the first half hour I reviewed some notation (and, or, conditional) and went over examples done in class except looking at them differently i.e. doing the purple & brown dice example without the chart. For the next half hour we did 3 practice problems from which it seems that the student understands probability. For the last half hour we worked on chapter 7 (cumulative distribution) homework, which it seems that the student understands just fine. Lastly, I recommended that the student attempt some practice problems."
"We worked on identifying transitive and intransitive verbs and direct and indirect objects for her English homework. The student struggled with differentiating between direct and indirect objects, but I gave her a few tips. We then completed her math homework. She still had trouble with calculating percentages. Relating percentages to test scores seemed to help her."
"The student has a test on the section involving integrations of log functions this week. He is smart, and is learning and progressing through his hard work."
"We reviewed the examples and problems about proportion he learned this week today. He did well on constant proportionality and understood the relationship between the constant proportionality and unit rates. We took some time and worked through the problems he had on maps and scale drawings. And finally, we solved the problem and practiced a little on that."
"This week I learned that the student did well in terms of Math grade on his most recent report card which is excellent! This week he and I discussed inequalities and how to solve them both algebraically and graphically. I explained to him a few tricks I picked up when I first learned this particular topic and they seemed to help him. Moreover, I advised him that in addition to completing his homework problems he should additional problems to fully comprehend the concepts. Overall, productive session."
"Today, we covered every topic that was going to be included on the student's test tonight. They included finding square root of negative numbers, finding vertices, axes of symmetry, and x and yintercepts of parabolas, graphing parabolas based on properties and transformations, and completing the square."
"Today we did a review for the student's test tomorrow on conic sections and analytic geometry. She felt good about circles so we basically skipped those and went straight to ellipses. We reviewed how to complete the square and how to graph ellipses once you have completed the equation. Finally we reviewed how to construct the equation and draw the graph given a few bits of information about it like the vertices, covertices, focus, etc. We then did the same exact thing for hyperbolas. Finally we did similar exercises for parabolas and found their equations."
"Finding roots of functions using the quadratic formula. In addition to covering the math topics, we are going to work on techniques to become more organized."
"The student had recently taken a test. I quickly recovered Newton's Method and then we briefly covered Differentials. She seems to get both sections which is great as she has not even covered them in class yet. We decided to go back through some of the earlier sections using an AP Exam Prep Book. This was a great exercise for both of us and I think we hammered out a few issues that the student may have still had with limits and trig functions."
"In our first meeting, the student told me about how he was doing in his math class and where he wanted to improve. He told me that he hadn't done so well on his last two exams and that he needed to do well on his remaining two exams. His professor had given his class an exam study sheet, which we began to discuss. We were able to review about a third of the study sheet, and the student was doing fairly well."
"We went over polynomial functions and how to find roots with a variety of methods, including using a calculator to solve for zeroes, factoring, and synthetic division. We also covered the binomial theorem and some examples of how to use polynomials in applied problems."
"The student has a quiz tomorrow on critical and stationary points, local extrema, and the Mean Value Theorem. We reviewed for it today. she did very well and felt confident by the end of the session.
Also, great news: after straight D's and F's in the course before our sessions began, she scored 98 on her last test!"
