Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Topics covered in conversation: ways to travel on his upcoming tour of the Western US (how to get from one airport to another in LA, taking the shuttle vs the bus); driving to and from tourist attractions; regional foods."
"First and foremost, we discussed goals, techniques, and the SAT in general. We then covered a little bit about essay writing and probability, and discussed what the student would need to do in order to maximize her study time, both alone and with a tutor."
"The student and I reviewed some algebra concepts (including solving equations for variables, fraction addition and subtraction, and exponents) about which he had some questions. We worked out several examples in his school algebra book. We plan to continue with the exam practice at our next session, which is scheduled for Saturday, September 1st."
"The student and I worked on homework involving using the quadratic equation and math problems with imaginary numbers. She had a good grasp on the quadratic formulas and was able to solve the problems with a small amount of simple errors. She wasn't as comfortable with the imaginary numbers and had more questions, but we were able to work through the questions together with little trouble."
"We went through her diagnostic exam and talked through some strategies for the four sections as well as the essay. I filled her in on some comma, colon, and semi-colon uses, and talked about how to best approach English questions that give her trouble, particularly ones that test sentence or paragraph placement. We then walked through some of the exam two English section, where she was able to come up with the correct answers much more quickly. Given that the diagnostic was her first exposure to the ACT, we discussed basic format as well."
"In the morning session, we went over the English sections of the SSAT. We did 30 vocabulary questions, 30 analogy questions, and 3 reading passages."
"Last session with the student. She has made great progress in her reading since July, and her vocabulary has increased a lot. I encourage her to slow down and try harder words. I have enjoyed working with her so much these last few months, and I'm sure she will continue to make great progress."
"The student and I covered multiplying integers. We reviewed her homework and did extra work from the assignment so she could get more practice. After we finished, we reviewed adding and subtracting integers. She did very well today."
"The student had an exam for calculus today so we reviewed his entire unit from basic rates of change to Riemann sum, u substitution, integration by parts among other topics. He was a bit rusty at first with the older topics but we solved many practice problems until he felt ready"
"For this session we covered thermodynamics. The student showed a strong grasp of the concepts as well as the math. The only thing he needs to work on is showing his units as he works through math problems. This will help him properly cancel out units (such as kJ vs J etc.)."
"The student and I worked on 2 chapters involving inventory, expenses, and hotel charges as well as restaurant charges. The purpose was to explain the two methods of involving inventory with food and drink charges. We went over all of the book work as well as the quizzes due that evening. I also gave her a sheet that listed all of the accounts and what sheet she would find them on."
"I checked the student's homework and he answered questions to a story. He did a very good job! I brought a big flip chart with lots of pictures that he had to explain what the people were doing and answer my questions. By the end he was doing very well, with excellent adjective agreement. He wanted to review the definitions of the verbs. He had to practice some, and he finally got the meanings of the verbs. He wrote the ones down he had the most trouble with and I told him to make flashcards. I believe he is prepared for his test and will do well."
