Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed Acid/ Base chemistry from our previous session - pH, pOH, Ka, Kw values and interchanging between then all. We then worked on some questions relating to finding the concentrations of strong acids and mixtures of strong acids in water. We also reviewed how to determine the strength of an acid. Finally, we introduced weak acids and I.C.E. problems. As usual, the student was very focused and engaged, and is doing very well - he is a pleasure to work with."
"The student and I prepared for her upcoming midterm this Wednesday. I asked her weakest area which she told me is genetics. I used the AP biology book to enhance her understanding in the basics. She is good at recalling information about specific terminology but is quite lacking in more broad understanding of the topic. To help her, I went over the book and asked her to draw diagrams as appropriate."
"The student was dealing mainly with celestial coordinate systems today, and how to convert between absolute and relative ones. I think he mainly just needed to have the systems set up in concept, and then he was able to work with them to compute what he needs. We talked about right ascension (hour angle) and local sidereal time, and how to picture them all together. I got to review a little bit myself with this material I had not dealt with in a little while. He will work on these problems and try to put these ideas to use. If he has more trouble with details, we can meet again."
"We covered biochemistry subjects like transcription and translation. The student needed help with these concepts and which compounds matched with each process. With some help, he caught on very fast, and the session went on very smoothly from there."
"During this session we went over questions on redox and acids and bases. The student needs a lot of review on the basics. I recommend he look at educational videos to catch up. Overall this session went well."
"We went over new material - converging and diverging lenses and how they are similar and different from mirrors. The student was able to apply the old concepts to the new concepts well. We also reviewed the magnetic force on a wire due to another current-carrying wire. She is still having difficulty with the concepts, so I recommended reviewing other similar problems and reading from the textbook. We will discuss it again next time."
