Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This is a special session since the students are aiming to learn business etiquette, rather than the language itself. I spoke with them about the things that they need to be aware of when doing business with Chinese people. We also discussed cultural differences. They had some specific questions on communicating with their business partner and the other important guests they will be meeting. We also learned a few words and phrases that are most likely going to be used when doing business with their Chinese clients."
"We finished lesson one with answering questions and adding culture background knowledge at the same time, and we did some grammar practice after that. We did some free conversation and started lesson 2 by going through some vocabularies. I left the homework for vocabulary and role-play preparing."
"We worked on the student's assignment on the issue of environment protection. First, we practiced on the vocabulary that is specific to the topic. Then, we worked on reading comprehension of several paragraphs of writing that are related to environmental protection."
"The student wanted some help on her Lesson 2 homework. We used the PowerPoint presentation her professor provided to introduce some important things foreign students need to pay attention to if they plan to travel to China. We learned some sentence structures such as fortunately and otherwise, to make sentences. I also introduced some words (skirt, dress, jeans, t-shirt, etc.) just help her to prepare for her oral test in the future."
"We covered a new chapter of material that expanded on the theme of school-related vocabulary. We focused on reading, pronunciation, and character recognition. The student's pronunciation is improving noticeably. He continues to perform well on writing assignments and shows a very good recall of past material."
"Today was our first class. We discussed a little bit about her Chinese class, what materials they covered, how many classes per week, and what teaching style she likes. We decided to preview the chapter before her class."
"Today is the first day the student asked me how to say a word in English. This is very exciting. Looking forward to expanding her vocabulary. We counted in Mandarin and English, practiced writing and reading together for the rest of the session."
"During this lesson we covered the material that showed up in the dialogue in preparation for an exam. The student was determined to understand the grammar and sentence structures in the text book, so we discussed that information in detail. As the session came to an end I suggested how she could finish preparing on her own before her test. The student is making great progress overall and based on her understanding of the material going into the sessions it is clear that she is working hard to understand things on her own first and clarify the details afterwards."
"Went through a practice exam; The student read all passages aloud, and we practiced reading comprehension (i.e. using key characters to extract passages' meanings despite not being able to read every character) and completed exercises together."
"The student and I had a great first session. We went over his homework and prepared for next week's chapter from his textbook. His Chinese level is not bad, but my job is to make things less confusing for him, pertaining to definitions, translations, and general conversation."
"Finished up Lesson 4 translations. Did extensive writing and speaking exercises. Had the student bring out her laptop as exam will be taken on computer."
