Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today went well. I assisted the student with her homework and helped her solve and double check any problems she was having difficulty with from yesterday and today. I brought in similarity proofs for more practice with proving similarity in triangles. She said she likes when I bring in more problems because they help her identifying possible solutions and recognizing patterns within problems. We will continue to practice similar triangles as we start working towards the Pythagorean Theorem"
"Met The student and got up to speed on what he's been doing in Geometry so far. Reviewed past tests and got through the current topics and ahead a little bit. The student seems to know the concepts generally, but has a tendency to read or work too fast, making avoidable mistakes. Slowing down would help him immensely."
"The student and I worked through proving triangles congruent with examples online and in her review packet. We will do additional work with SSS, SAS, ASA proofs later this week. Then we discussed mitosis and cancer for biology."
"Today the student and I covered how to determine line equations given different scenarios. This is a highly important concept so we worked through this during our session. Specifically, we covered slope, slope-point form, and the slope-intercept form of the equation. He told me that he had previous experience with line equations when he took Algebra I. I showed him the purpose of the line equations and how their names actually provide hints for what is required to create a line equation. By the end of the night, he was able to create a line equation from just a point and a slope, and also given parallel or perpendicular slopes. Great session overall. We will review next Monday for upkeep."
"The student has a test on Tuesday in geometry so we spent the session reviewing the concepts for the test. She had some problems that were given as part of the class lecture that we started with. These questions dealt with how to find the measure of an angle in a triangle given the other two angles. The other thing that we reviewed was how to determine whether triangles are congruent using the SSS, SAS, AAS and ASA theorems. She also had a review packet that we went through that practiced the above skills as well as identifying congruent angles and sides in two congruent triangles. By the end of the session, she had a good handle on the material and she should do well on the test."
"The student worked on a review packet over the chapter on quadrilaterals. She reviewed problems on the properties of parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombuses, trapezoids and isosceles trapezoids, and kites."
"In this session, we solved for angles and lengths for shapes such as a square, rhombus, parallelogram, and a trapezoid. He asked for help understanding the properties for the various shapes (square, rhombus, and etc.), so we did extra review. He is getting good with solving for the unknowns such as length and angle once the equation is set up."
"We did geometry review questions from the Internet that covered volume and surface area. We then went through practice proofs for parallel lines, the converse of parallel lines, and parallelograms."
"We reviewed the concepts of special right triangles then discussed trig functions. We started with tangent and did numerous sample problems. We then did sample problems with sine and cosine. The student seems to understand the material, and I gave him a mnemonic device to help him remember trig functions."
"Went over triangles and Pythagorean concepts. The student had no trouble understanding the math behind the section, but he needed a little refresher on the concepts and its applications. We went over different types of triangles (acute, obtuse, and right) and how to determine type through sides. We then went into detail on the Pythagorean theorem and its applications (distance formula, finding sides of a right triangle, etc.). After our review, I issued several practice problems to him which he performed successfully with no help. I prepared a cheat sheet for him summarizing everything we reviewed so he could retain the information. He has a test on Thursday."
"She has just started working on special triangles. We went through her homework which included problems about 30-60-90 triangles and 45-45-90 triangles. This went rather quickly so for the remainder of the time we worked on her chemistry problems, which were balancing equations. We went through as much as I could in the allotted time and I left her with some extra notes in case she needed a little extra help on her remaining problems. I was told that on her recent quiz she received a perfect score! I'm glad she did so well. I was excited to see while going through this assignment that she needed very little coaching beyond my encouragement to be confident in her responses. I hope that she will carry this through as she continues in this section and the problems become more challenging."
"I assisted the student with her geometry homework, which consisted of a worksheet that was about translations. She had to draw the translations of shapes and describe the translations of a shape that was moved from one location to another. She did well on the worksheet and finished early."
