Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student and I finished studying for her upcoming ACT. She has improved tremendously since we began our sessions! She raised her cumulative score by six points. Excellent job!"
"Student wrote a timed essay before our session and he did pretty well. He attempted to do a 8/16/7 format, but he felt he needed more time for planning and writing. We decided to proceed with 10/20 formats. We discussed how he could make his essay stronger- including more real world examples, etc. I gave him a few more suggestions for test day on reading, science, and English- like trying a new order for reading (starting with social science and natural science and ending with prose or humanities). Student then did a timed essay, and he did very well. I told him I expected it to receive a 4 or 5 out of 6, which is an improvement over his average of 3 on his first test. He used examples from his life, but needed to work on completing ideas. We discussed how he could correct this- if he has time to revise, start out by simply reading the essay and noting whether ideas are fully explained and connected. We also discussed how he could use the arguments listed in the prompt as arguments for and against in his own essay. Next he did two English passages under timed conditions. He did very well on the first but struggled with the second. He missed some questions because of not taking the time to read the entire question and not choosing correct noun/verb agreement. He asked if I could put together something that reviews basic grammar so he can work on that before the test. I am having him do two units of science questions under un-timed conditions. He does have to do a reading test under timed conditions, attempting to answer them in the new order. I will be bringing worksheets for us to focus on tomorrow."
"Because the student is taking her ACT this Saturday, we quickly reviewed each section of the ACT. She seemed to be doing fine with each section, and I gave her a sheet of basic tips that would help her on the ACT."
