Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Went through the review packets on trigonometry (solving equations involving trig functions and finding angles) and logarithms (rules for expanding and how to solve)."
"I assigned the student a lesson from a higher-level math book. He completed 20 problems in about 40 minutes and exhibited strong understanding of concepts and solutions."
"The student reviewed material for his exam on statistics involving histograms, mean, median, mode, and percentile. Expression of strategies and computation was expressed through speech and the work was checked for accuracy. Word problems involving D=RT was also practiced. Used a visual aid such as drawings for comprehension and use of charts for organization of math facts were practiced to improve comprehension of the material."
"The topic of the lesson was solving logarithmic equations. Student had a HW assignment that we went over. Student significantly improved over the course of the lesson. She was encouraged to review log and exponential operations. This was a first session."
"We mainly worked on scale drawing. The student really understood the concept and scale drew a table and many items on the table. He is making great progress in how he shows his work also. Our next steps are to focus on more geometry and working with angles."
"The student and I practiced proofs and simplifications using trigonometric rules and identities. We specifically focused on sums and differences of angles and Pythagorean identities. The practice problems requiring sums and differences of angles were very straight-forward; she just needed to become familiar with how to apply the formulas to the problem. The proofs were much more demanding and less straightforward. She and I worked through these problems using many different strategies. The toughest part about these is recognizing which identity to use. In the end of our session, I compiled a list of the strategies for her to practice. She is very easy to work with. She isn't afraid to ask questions, and she often answers them herself when I give her a hint. She is very strong in algebra, which is critical for this material. When she gets stuck with a complicated operation, her first instinct is often correct, but she sometimes second guesses herself and strays from the solution. This tells me that she knows these skills but could use a little more practice."
