Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued preparation for math and reading tests. Wrote a story about a project in class, in which the student is making hot dog mummies using hot dogs and baking soda. Read and discussed two chapters in book about King Tut. Learned about ancient Egypt, King Tut's family history, and King Tut's early years. Tested reading comprehension with periodic questions. Verbally quizzed the student on multiplication tables. Began with multiples of 5 and continued to other multiples under 12. Together, we created a multiplication chart for him to study from when preparing for the math test."
"The student completed a math minute today in 3 minutes and 30 seconds, answering all multiplication facts correctly! She has consistently performed well on the multiplication facts and we talked today about introducing division facts in the coming weeks given the close relationship between multiplication and division. We will continue to work on multiplication facts. She worked on four word problems on her own, correctly answering each one. Reading comprehension strategies focused on "visualization.""
"The concepts that we covered specifically were mostly multiplication and division problems. The student really was interested in improving not only his math skills, but also his writing skills. I included more strategies especially for the writing component of his packet. He needs to practice more of his skills more often, so that he does not forget any pertinent information."
"During my session with the student, we worked on a spelling test which covered 6 of the major vowel sounds we've worked on so far, we continued to work on the different sounds for y, and we began reviewing verb tenses. For extra practice, she is to work on the short a vowel sound and the /oi/ sound chapters in her spelling workbook. This session was a win. The student scored 90% correct on her spelling test!"
"Today the student read a fictional short story and answered multiple choice and short answer questions about the story. He also practiced his grammar skills by identifying the different parts of speech in sentences, and determining the correct use of quotes, commas, semicolons and end marks."
"The student and I continued working on Gossip Monster. We practiced skills such as identifying the author's purpose, sentence structure, and making inferences. He did a great job at reading this B level book. He scored a 60 on his comprehension test. We will work on comprehension during our next session."
