Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We continued with practice questions for the assessment. The topics covered: kinematics, the Doppler effect, and circuits. We practiced performing calculations without a calculator and I showed her a number of useful tricks for doing calculations quickly and easily in your head. At the end of the session we decided that we would work with assessment physics for one more session before returning to the assessment math section."
"Today we talked about what his problems were when taking the assessment. I could tell that it was an attention problem and he gets anxiety when in the testing room. My plan is to get him really comfortable with taking each section of the test so that he does not get nervous on test day. We did a passage of each section and talked about test-taking techniques for each section."
"The student and I spent our time mostly going over the practice assessment Math and English sections that he completed. Through this we were able to talk through concepts he didn't remember like trigonometric identities, the equation of a circle, certain grammar rules, etc. The student understood and was able to apply what I was explaining quickly and most of the questions he got wrong were for similar concepts that he hadn't studied before, which is a very good sign. We spent the rest of our time talking through the assessment Critical Reading section and different approaches and strategies. For next time, I asked him to complete practice assessment Reading and Science sections."
"The student and I worked through a part of one of the critical reading sections in the practice test we were working on from the last tutoring session. I taught him a few strategies to employ while taking that section of the assessment, such as underlining the key words in both the passage and the questions being asked. We then worked through an entire 20-question math section together. I taught him some helpful tips that would help him better understand how to solve the types of math problems asked on the assessment (process of elimination, plugging in each answer until you get a right one, underlining the parts of the question so as to not get confused with what is being asked)."
"The student and I worked on assessment Test 5. We reviewed vocabulary, grammatical errors and essay writing. For homework, the student is to complete the remainder of Test 5 that we did not finish, write two generic introductory paragraphs and complete the essay in Test 6."
"Today's topics focused on ACT Science: A timed practice session was administered and the results discussed. Strategies and tactics were then discussed for the Science section. English homework was discussed and reviewed. For Math, the topic of focus was Word Problems."
"This morning, I reviewed some of the math tests that the student had completed. He is very good about finishing his assignments. We hit math pretty hard again, going over volume, area, properties of three dimensional objects, mean, median, mode, number lines, and how to convert word problems to variables and signs. The student and I also went over an entire English section. I recommended that he, again, look up at least 25 SAT words today, complete a single math test, and complete a single essay before our next session on Thursday. This is in order to help him practice critical reading."
"ACT Math Diagnostic Results - Focus needed in Algebra/Geometry/Trig. Left With: Algebraic Expressions worksheet, Solving systems of equations worksheets, practice writing prompt."
"This was our preliminary meeting to discuss the plan of action for our future meetings. The session included a discussion of past SAT attempts, strategy, and practice. We spent the last portion of the session working through practice problems from a study book. Next session will be focused on one concept chapter from the book, and more practice problems."
"We went over the ACT Science, Math, and Reading sections. We covered each via a practice test and review. This gave me a baseline in these sections and helped me see where the student struggles with each. Her biggest issue during this session seemed to be with focusing the entire way through the section and making sure that she didn't just skim over readings/data. I assigned her 3 practice tests from each ACT subject and worked with her on focusing on the details in each passage appropriately without losing focus."
"We finished up our section of the ACT Science that we had left. We went over the problems that she got wrong on an ACT English section that she completed on her own in a timed setting. At the end, I gave her some sample problems that I created with concepts that I knew she was struggling with. We have scheduled another session for tomorrow where we will go into the ACT Reading and go over any troubles that she is having with the Math section."
"Reviewed the student's SAT homework. There are a few odds and ends we are still working on to improve her math score, but she is doing well overall. In preparation for the ACT, I gave her a trigonometry lesson, which included SOHCAHTOA, tan = sin/cos, radians, conversion between radians and degrees, and the counterclockwise measurement of angles in the coordinate plane."
