How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?
The HSPT, or High School Placement Test, is a test given to eighth graders who are applying to enter some private Catholic schools. It is given once in the fall and once in the spring each year. Because of the limited opportunity to take the test, it's important that your child does well on it when they take it. An expert HSPT tutor in Carmel, IN, is an excellent way to try to help your child prepare for their exam.
Varsity Tutors will match you with an HSPT tutor in Carmel who will motivate your child to reach beyond their goals on the HSPT. The exam is quite comprehensive, testing students in five areas: language, math, quantitative skills, reading, and verbal skills. There are other sections that can be added by individual schools, such as mechanical aptitude, science, or the Catholic religion, and the specific school could also add customized sections. With this wide range of topics, it's likely your student will need help in at least a couple to prepare for the test.
In addition to helping your student on content, their tutor could help them learn how to take the test. This means they will use sample questions that are in the same format as the test they will be taking. Their tutor will give them tips and strategies on how to best answer the questions, in what order, and at the speed necessary to complete the entire test. Your child will walk into the exam room on test day with confidence, because there will be no surprises awaiting them. Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
After reading, we moved onto a sample math test. She completed the entire test with about 30 seconds to spare. She missed 9 questions out of 60. This scored out to a 32 on the math test. Most of the missed questions were to do with graphics/number lines/shapes, a theme we had seen before. However, she understood her errors and in most cases they were due to feeling like she had to rush through the test. If she had taken just a bit more time she would have probably caught some of her errors. We will work on slowing down just a touch in the next session."
