Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I went over the most complicated concept in programming, recursion. We spent the entire 90 minutes going over example after example, completing two worksheets he had been given. We made excellent progress, and his grasp of recursion came a long way."
"The student did well overall. She did struggle a bit with her free response and I would rate most of her answers between a 3-4 quality on the AP exam. However, she was quick to understand where her methodology was incorrect and more importantly why it was so. Several of the errors she made were more linked to reading the question improperly versus answering it incorrectly, so I am confident that if she pays careful attention to the wording of her problems that she will do well."
"In today's tutoring session we went over the free response questions from a recent AP Computer Science exam. I went through each question with her and explained the thought process for each question. There is still a lot of content to cover, but we were able to cover a large number of concepts. I think next session we will return to working with some multiple choice problems in the areas I know she's struggling. We definitely need to focus on arrays and for loops before the exam. Array lists were a new subject today, but she seemed to understand those rather readily. I think next session I will create some form of visual aid for conveying what is occurring in arrays to help her grasp the concept. Overall I think she is making progress in the subject, but we need to be able to move through these concepts in the next two sessions to ensure we can practice enough before the AP exam."
"We went over a mock AP exam. The student did well, but more practice is desired. He has question 3 still to answer, and I am sending him the multiple choice exam for next time."
"This session was guided by the student's recent practice test. His biggest issues seem to be tracing code execution. He does well when he has to slow down and think through each step. However, it seems that he rushes a bit and doesn't complete the work when left on his own. We focused on these skills, though we also did work through one free-response question together as well. We will continue to work on this."
"We reviewed quite a few topics, including recursion, relationships, and general programming logic and syntax. The student was attentive and responsive, as usual. He asked questions that clarified things he was unsure about, and I was able to respond in a way that helped him resolve the issue. He still has some syntax problems to work out, but aside from that there are virtually no issues. He said that he will do some more practice exams. I will create another question set to judge his abilities."
