Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We learned lots of new words today. Like happy birthday, the way you say 'AM' or 'PM' and the location like store, shopping mall, church, restaurant, and school. At last, we made a long sentence structure 'I went to school at 2 PM' (past tense)."
"We practiced writing of dates and numbers, and today's new lesson was "doing math in Chinese," so she had to use new vocab such as "add" and "equal to" to put numbers together. That was a little challenge to her, because it was the first complete long sentence she ever spoke. It took her awhile to adjust to the idea, even though the concept is simple, so we practiced saying: 1+1=2, 2+1=3, 3+1=4 etc., all the way to 9+1=10. After this lesson, we read more animal books I brought from China and played the "five chase" game at which she got better and better; she beat me twice!"
"The student and I reviewed briefly Lecciones 13 & 14 discussing material covered in the book. We spent the rest of this session reviewing, categorizing, and noting the behavior of various types of pronouns. We distinguished the sentence placement with DOP's vs. IOP's, and identified the difference between object pronouns and personal pronouns. We discussed the reflexive "se" and "le + lo --> se + lo" rule. We reviewed our reflexive pronouns and translated various commands from English to Spanish using reflexive verbs. We talked about pronouns with infinitives, commands, and all other conjugated verbs. We have spent a few lessons on pronouns now but he seemed to really grasp the distinctions made today while writing notes on the different types of pronouns and their behavior within the sentence."
"We covered mostly numbers, animals, and colors. The boys told me what they knew and I got a better sense of their vocabulary and knowledge. At first, they did not open up to me. I believe that toward the end when they both felt more comfortable they were having fun showing me what they knew. I read two books to them to make them feel comfortable at first, which I believe was very successful in the end. I strongly believe that once we get to know each other, the boys will feel comfortable enough where they can speak fluently in Spanish."
"Today, we continued looking at vocabulary. As before, I used simple and related sentences as examples to help the student comprehend. I also demonstrated how to write some difficult Chinese characters on the paper. In order to get her prepared for the coming exam on Wednesday, I checked her answers on the homework."
"The student and I worked on a review of his vocabulary worksheet. He needed to recognize the character, write a definition of the word, and then use it in a sentence. There were about twenty words and he was able to complete all of it. After working on vocabulary, we moved to the study guide. He identified words that he did not recognize and we practiced using them in sentences. Tomorrow, we will work on writing the words."
