Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed a MCAT she had taken and there was a decrease in score, but she told me how she had crammed excessively for it, and I believe this may have affected her performance. She is taking another test and will not be doing that again, which I believe will be a better representation of her ability."
"Discussed kinetics and equilibrium, the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation, reaction rate, and acid/base chemistry."
"Went over test content outline to gauge types of questions that may be asked. Talked about MCAT logistics and the best method of approaching the MCAT with confidence."
"I met with the student this morning. I think it went well for our first meeting. We discussed the material he was having questions with, and then went over some basic approaches to the test. He would like to review distinguishing the authors' view from the other views discussed in the Verbal passages next week."
"The student had questions about several subjects within the MCAT. I also set her up with a progress sheet and some electronic files to aid her studying."
"The student has finished the physical science material and is moving on to biological science. We began the session by working through some circuit questions, which had given her some trouble. We then spent some time reviewing verbal passages she has previously completed before ending the session with a discussion of pedigrees and ADH and aldosterone."
"The student had some questions after doing more practice problems since our last session. I went over the specific questions and expanded on the concepts. Specifically, we looked at electrical conductivity of heart muscle, relative vascular pressures as related to the proximity to the heart, gas exchange, and the lymph system. I then began going over organic chemistry basics, specifically bonding and the types of bonds."
"Worked on verbal reasoning by going through a couple sample passages, discussed how to read passages and what types of answer categories to be aware of. Then reviewed physics, specifically rotation problems. She was struggling with torque problems, so we did a number of them to the point that she was comfortable with how to solve them."
"Today we continued our studying of the physics section. We finished up kinetics, moved on and finished thermodynamics, and we started working on fluid mechanics."
"The student and I met for the first time this session to discuss her study habits and concerns in order to form a study plan. She didn't score as well as she would have liked on a previous MCAT and is looking to increase her score significantly. For the first hour of our session, she and I discussed her study habits, materials, and exercises in order to figure out what works / does not work well for her. She told me that she felt there was not enough passage practice in her current set of books, so we discussed potentially purchasing a test prep set. We also made a study plan such that she will feel comfortable taking the MCAT in January. For the second hour, we worked on basic mechanics questions in the test prep book that I brought. For this week, she is going to review Newtonian mechanics as well as the fundamentals of general chemistry. We also came up with a plan for her to learn organic chemistry reactions and physiological systems on her own time in November and December so she doesn't have to cram them in during winter break. I'm looking forward to seeing how she tackles the review and will adjust our approach accordingly."
"We worked on timing and test taking skills today. I crafted a schedule for the student to follow for the next few weeks on her own time."
"We went over a practice exam in MCAT physics. Then we went over some testing strategies for MCAT verbal. Finally we did some practice problems in MCAT organic chemistry."
