Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I revisited finding the quadratic equations given a vertex and its roots, either explicitly or graphically. We spent a good deal of time discussing series, and how to use them to solve problems, like finding consecutive even integers whose product is a given number."
"The student worked on her math homework. She is working on expanded form. We also worked on a reading assessment which she did very well on with little help. We also read for a half hour and summarized what we read."
"Today the student finished his homework assignment. We reviewed the translation between vector and matrix equations, equivalent statements regarding the solution sets of Ax=b equations and a couple examples of how to set up a matrix equation from a word problem."
"Today we did ACT Math. The girls went through a practice test in an ACT Math practice book I had that highlights math concepts. We then went through the answers, focusing on the questions they answered incorrectly or didn't understand. Overall they did an excellent job and I think they will do very well on the ACT Math section. They had also taken a class at school today about ACT science and finished the questions on their own and feel better about Science. We went over general test anxiety questions at the end and came up with a plan for our last session before the test next Tuesday."
"Student and I worked on completing her review problems for her math exam. She was able to solve 43% of the problems without errors. She requires more assistance when writing division problems, creating equal proportions, finding common denominators of fractions, and memorizing the equations for both area and perimeter of circles and rectangles."
"She is working on stoichiometry and finding the empirical and molecular formulas of equations. We worked a lot on some worksheets she had. I will be meeting with her again on Friday to further support her understanding of these problems."
"Student is enthusiastic about getting her conversational Spanish to a more fluent level. Her listening comprehension is very good, but she struggles to express some ideas. She wants to focus more on speaking, but we will do some exercises in between lessons on verb tense and conjugations as well as pronouns. Conducted about 30% of lesson directly in Spanish."
"The student brought in a short outline of his essay. The student and I went through it: adding points, removing certain things, rearranging some of it. I also advised how to add citations from various sources to back his argument and exactly where to add them. We also went over the optimum length of the different parts of his essay."
"Today, we covered multiplying, dividing, and adding, radicals. In addition, we covered harder addition problems with fractions and variables. She seemed to be feeling a lot more confident about them."
"The student and I worked on essay writing again. He had difficulty with the homework and did a different lesson instead. We worked on correcting his descriptive writing, and then used the unfinished homework for the day's lesson. We worked on writing a four-paragraph compare and contrast essay. After some struggles, he was able to use a graphic organizer to help focus his thoughts and produced good work. He has two essays to write and typing games for homework."
"After studying for his marketing exam this morning, the student and I finished a few minor assignments for his English class and Intro to Special Education class. He should focus on finishing his English paper and doing a bit more marketing extra credit by writing two (one-page) summaries of business articles in newspapers. The English essay has already been researched, and he just needs to structure it based off of past essays. I will help him do this throughout the week."
"The student was being introduced to magnetism and magnetic force in her class, and we tried to develop some problem-solving strategies for that topic. In addition, we did a general review of right-hand rules related to finding magnetic fields and force directions. She seemed to pick up the RHR geometry readily, but had trouble with getting a mental picture of how all the forces and fields lined up (the most challenging part of this topic, in my opinion). But with more practice, I think she will be fine."
