Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"I worked with the student on amplitude and period of sin/cos waves I also gave her practice on Double angle and Half angle formulas. Then we went through a little more than half of a science ACT section. She is doing well."
"The student and I studied for the ACT. We did a practice reading section. The student performed very well. He was able to consistently answer questions correctly and he had a strong thought process in solving the problems."
"Today we looked at the science section again briefly and then focused on the math section for the rest of the time. We looked at different ways to look at and set up proportions like thinking of them in simpler terms, finding real world connections, and setting up different types of fractions for converting units or simplifying proportions. I am sending the student a couple of emails, one with more practice on these types of problems and one with some tips for test-day and reminders about the various test sections."
"We spent the first part of this session reviewing the student's homework. He did the first half of a math section in the practice test book. We discussed various area formulas and how to appropriately use algebra in word problems. The student has been doing much better in English than when he started. His rhetorical skills in particular have improved. He still needs more practice in punctuation but is improving in grammar mechanics as well."
"Today we worked mostly on reading. She had done two passages for homework so we reviewed those. For practice, I am having her attempt to make a skeleton outline of the passages so that she spends time really trying to find what is most essential. Out of the 20 questions, she got 16 correct which we were pleased with. We spent a little bit of time with English and math. She has made a lot of progress, especially because she puts in a lot of work at home during the week."
"The student and I worked on science and writing today. We covered elements of a strong essay and then he wrote a sample essay and we discussed its strengths and weaknesses. Then he took a practice science test and we went over strategies to increase his efficiency on that test. He told me his goal score on the writing and science portions of the test, which I was happy to hear because he has initiative and motivation to reach his goals when he sets them for himself. Overall I am pleased with his progress so far and he is confident in his own abilities."
"Today, we covered English and math homework before doing science timed trials. Then, we launched into a discussion of the ACT essay and how it differs from the SAT essay. She's doing well every week, and we're continuing to build strategy and content."
"The student and I went over the science questions. We talked about jotting notes about what the scientists are manipulating in the experiment, especially when comparing different experiments. Then we did math problems-focused on fractions and writing equations from word problems. She'll do a few more writing equations problems for practice. We did the 1st passage on the sample ACT English passage website and discussed the format of the ACT English section. We focused on questions with prepositional phrases and modifying phrases. She'll do a reading practice before next week."
"The student worked on factoring and multiplying polynomials to prepare for the mathematics section. He also practiced solving problems from the math practice test, and we talked about strategies for his upcoming test."
"We did a lot of math problems and the student did very well, needing only hints for a few of them. We also did a reading passage where he had great comprehension. I am very optimistic about his upcoming test date!"
"Today we reviewed math content by working through 40 problems together. The student has a solid understanding of the math. There were no concerns from this session."
"Today, the student and I went over some science questions, and he did really well with them! We then did a few Math practice tests on the website. He has his second test on Tuesday and I think he is going to do even better than he did on his first!"
